Guest Speaker last week
Chrissy Moyle of the CFA gave us a very concise and fluent report, supported by an excellent audio/visual program, on what we should and shouldn’t do in this fire season. In this past year of lowest ever rainfall, unprecedented water restrictions, tinder dry countryside and extreme fire danger, none of us are immune!
Clearly, we should all have a fire plan, in writing, clearly understood by every family member, and we need to be aware of the many dangers, of which radiant heat is only one. You don’t see fire fighters in shorts and thongs. We need to have, readily at hand, goggles, face masks and protective, full-length clothing, and even if you are an urban dweller, there should be unobstructed access to the nearest water supply. If your property is large enough for vehicle access, there needs to be space for a fire truck to manoeuvre, including the ability to turn around. A very timely address to our club members

Litigant A person about to give up his skin for the hope of retaining his bones.

Liver A large red organ thoughtfully provided by nature to be bilious with.
Our adventures with the Canadians – thus far
Our eight visitors have come from Southampton, Ontario, on the eastern shores of Lake Huron, and further south than 99% of the rest of Canada, and currently at least 50o.c. colder than it is here.

Don & Jenny Amy, Michael & Andrea Leblance, Judy & Keith Nixon, and Bob & Karen Speight.
Hosted by
Geoff & Hazel Ford, Bill & Marion Walton, John & Jan Fox, and Rod & Judy Greer.
The adventure started last Saturday morning at gate 2 of the MCG, where the eight couples were joined by Peter [MCG guide] Hawthorne & Jo. I hesitate to say this, but the Foxes arrived at a time nearest to the appointed time, than any other couple. Peter then took us on a marvelous tour of the MCG facilities, and we even got out on to the hallowed turf!
We put Michael Leblance at full forward, and the two Waltons on the wings. The rest of the mob spent most of the time on the interchange bench.
We then adjourned to the Kooyong Tennis Club where our mixed doubles were interrupted by rain and a rotten little bastard who drove up to the Walton’s Peugeot sedan, smashed the driver’s side window and pinched their ‘navman’ off the instrument ledge. All that in an off-road private carpark not 10 metres from busy Glenferrie Rd.! The Waltons took this setback very much better that I would.
Peter Hawthorne was responsible for all the day’s activities, except the smash ‘n grab, and we were all very appreciative. He had booked a table for 18 and the service and food was great Most of us ended the day with a drive down the Mornington Peninsular and an overseas trip!!
The four groups went their separate ways until yesterday, when we met at Fyansford and drove in convoy to the Walton’s sheepery and piggery at Rokewood. The five-stand shearing was a tremendous show for us all, and a highlight was undoubtedly Rod Greer shearing a sheep!!! OK, so 35 minutes is not exactly a record; Jackie Howe shore 321 sheep in 7 hours 40 minutes, with blade shears!!
At the Piggery, 8,000 snorting porkers greeted us joyfully, no doubt believing we had come to set them free from their destiny. No such luck! The little’ies get to stay with mom in the birthing box for only 21 days, and then they live a communal, [and brief] life with just one real luxury –thousands of Mars Bars, all minced up, from which their weight greatly accelerates. Bill ‘n Marion took us for joyrides on their
Quad-bikes and no-one fell off. All passengers hung on grimly, except the sheepdogs. A great day!!
Termorra we’re orf to Ballarat, [Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum] and on Thursday to Port Campbell overnight, via the Great Ocean Road.. To be continued.

Keith Nixon speaks to the club at the home of Alison George.
