In Memoriam
I am always grateful for articles submitted by my readers. The above heading, and the following article, written by Ian Fraser of Ian Fraser Associates, were received by e-mail from my UK contact, Rtn. Robin Stevens.
“ Recently this week, UK removed ‘The Holocaust’ from its school curriculum because it ‘offended’ the Moslem population which claims it never occurred. This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving in to it.
It is now more than 60 years since the Second World War ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian peoples looking the other way.
Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the holocaust to be a myth, it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.
This e-mail is intended to reach 40 million people worldwide! Join us and be a link in the memorial chain and help us distribute it around the world.
Please send this e-mail to 10 people you know and ask them to continue the memorial chain. Please don’t delete it. It will only take you a minute to pass this along – Thanks!”

The Donations-in-Kind depot in North Geelong
Head-of-Project Geoff Ford reported last week that the Ocean Grove team has been appointed the official maintenance team for the project. Our small but efficient crew are involved on Wednesday mornings to repair bicycles, beds, wheelchairs etc. More volunteers would be warmly welcomed. They also need, at the DIK HQ, volunteers to sort books.
Polio eradication is an enormous plus for the Rotary Foundation, and us
Trevor McArdle also reported last week [I ran out of space for both these items] that $US600M has been spent on this project to date, resulting in this dread disease being reduced by 99%
Some pieces of interesting but otherwise useless information about animals
• Longest gestation - The pregnancy of an Asian elephant lasts 660 days, about 22 months.
• Shortest gestation - The young of the Virginian opossum develop fully in just 12 days.
• Largest animal baby – Blue whales are 6-8 metres long and weigh 2-3 tonnes at birth. Every day, the baby drinks 200 litres of its mother’s milk.
• Youngest female breeder – Female Norway lemmings can breed when they’re just 14 days old.
• Fair dinkum

A few facts about organ donorship
• Rotary District 9780 has been promoting organ donation since 2000.
• Each organ donor can save or improve the life of up to 10 people through life-saving transplant ops.
• 30% of the Australian population have registered, but up to 87% of them may need to re-register.
• On average, there are 200 transplants in Oz each year. At the same time, there could be 2000 people waiting. An estimated 100 die each year, waiting!
• The web page is a long quote. It would be easier to phone, toll-free, the Registry on 1800 777 203.

Distorted Nursery Rhyme No. V1
Georgie Porgy Pudding and Pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry.
And when the boys came out to play,
He kissed them too ‘cause he was gay.

$25 for three courses – and excellent service
That’s Davidsons, where we staged tonight’s meeting. Completed in 1887, it was remodeled to become Davidson’s restaurant in 1978 and again in 2000 and now operates as a training facility of the Gordon Institute where students gain hands-on experience in hospitality service and cooking. This practical work forms a very necessary part of student training.
We provided 61 patrons at 7 tables, with help from 4 from the RC Torquay and several guests of Rotarians and our wives. It was a great night, and Pres.Elect Alison has already put it on her calendar of events for her year.
Pres. Richard screened an eight minute film clip of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, which enthused a number of our ladies.

Headline news
• There will be a special board meeting after Rotary next Tuesday to decide on the distribution of charitable funds..
• Geoff Ford has been lead to believe that the gross takings [or is it net?] from this year’s Queenscliff’s Seafood Fest is about $71,500. If it’s gross, it’s a stupendous effort. If it’s net, it’s unbelievable.
• Geoff Chandler was tops in this week’s footy tipping, with 7/8. Bloody sight better than 1/8 in rd. 1!!
