I have a new computer, but I still call it FRED
Without the invaluable help from my friend and past club secretary Mark Donehue, you would probably not get this ‘bully’, and I am not convinced, at 2.30 on Tuesday afternoon, that you will. Mark left here at about 7.30 last night after 2 hours on the job, and the monitor said ‘Downloading updates, please wait’. I checked at 3.00AM, 7.00 AM and again just before I phoned Mark at 1.00 PM, 18 hours after the first appearance, and the bloody thing was still saying that! Mark suggested the very mundane solution of switching everything off and then on again. BINGO! The little man inside must have gone to sleep.

Travel Aid for ill Children
Eligible families with seriously ill children traveling to Perth for medical treatment can now receive financial assistance for travel and accommodation from a fund totaling $A64,000. In November last year, the Rotary club of Boulder, WA, launched the Princess Margaret Hospital Goldfields Family Assistance Trust with the proceeds from its annual radio auction. The trust aims to eliminate the financial stress of travel to and from Perth for treatment and family visits to hospitalized children.

A play on words
Committee A body that keeps minutes and wastes hours.
Dust Mud with the juice squeezed out.
Egotist Someone who is usually me-deep in conversation
Gossip A person who will never tell a lie if the truth will do more damage.
Nigerian school gets e-quipped
Just last year, the Rotary club of Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, teamed up with internet service provider Netcom Africa to bring computers and internet access to the Victoria Island Primary School. Current technology and equipment will help teachers educate students more effectively and work to bridge the information gap. Rotarians donated 20 flat-screen Dell Pentium 4 computers along with a newly furnished computer room. Netcom Africa has provided one full year of internet access.

This Day Tonight
• The Bentnells and the Kemps are back, and Ben & Suzy are a pair.
• The hotel will undergo renovations for the next 3 months and will be closed to the public, but, incredibly, we will be catered for as usual every Tuesday. Each table at tonight’s meeting was favored with two bottles of wine with the compliments of the management.
• Our change-over dinner will be held at the Barwon Heads Golf Club on Tuesday 3rd July. Gentlemen, you are advised that a jacket and tie is essential. President-Elect Alison desires that Paul Harris Awardees wear badge and ribbon.
• Bill and Marion are into the Stephanie Alexander Garden Project and have actually met Steph.
• Rod Greers 6/8 in the footy tipping comp. is hardly worth mentioning.
• Our 4 newest Rotarians are enthusiastic members. All stress the camaraderie of this club, and only minor reservations about the usual problems of timing and other commitments. Do we really need more members? And do they have to be young. As Pete said… “what’s wrong with being old?”

Am I too old, too intolerant, too old-fashioned, or just plain Dumb?
I read with concern how a mob,[A] of local businessmen pooled a sum of money to help another mob,[B] of council aspirants get elected.
Some of mob B owned up to receiving this ‘aid’, some didn’t. Some got elected, some didn’t. The main reason for mob A’s generousity appears to have been connected with a desire to get a piece of land in North Geelong approved for a commercial development. It looks as if that strategy might have worked.
Then, and not, apparently, connected with the above, there was the front page story in yesterday’s Age and todays Addy about the hospitality extended to the mayor on a yacht in the Mediterranian and in a London flat by a generous ratepayer who happened to seek a local night club development. ‘Seems he, the mayor, sent an e-mail to a couple of council mates urging their support for the plan, which, not surprisingly, they deny receiving. But the point is, the e-mail was sent. The press claims to have a copy.
Now then, I don’t claim to know how council works, but after 25 years as a local government auditor, I think I know how it should work. Yeah, perhaps I am all of those things in the heading? Or is it just a media hoax, a bit like a sick joke on April Fools Day?
Rotary bulletin editors should not write about politics, religion or sex. Footy is all the go in this town, but there is nothing to complain about in the footy, at present.
I wonder what Paul Harris would have thought?
