The Golfing Nun contributed by Rod Bush, [without all the dots]
A nun walks into Mother Superior’s office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration.
“What troubles you, Sister?” asks the MS. “I thought this was the day you spent with your family.”
“It was,” sighed the Sister, “and I went to play golf with my brother, and we try to play golf as often as we can.. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ.”
“I seem to recall that,” the MS agreed. “So I take it your day of golf was not relaxing?”
“Far from it.” Snorted the Sister. “In fact, I even took the Lord’s name in vain today!”
“Goodness, Sister!” gasped the MS.”I am astonished. You must tell me al about it.”
“Well, we were on the fifth tee, and that hole is a monster, Mother – 540 metres par 5, with a nasty dogleg left and a hidden green, and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I ever made. And it’s flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted, and it hits a bird in mid-flight not 100 yards off the tee!”
“Oh my!” commiserated the MS. “How unfortunate. But surely that didn’t make you blaspheme, Sister?”
“No, that wasn’t it,” admitted the sister. “While I was still trying to fathom out what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!”
“Oh, that would have made me blaspheme”, sympathized MS.
“But I didn’t, Mother Superior”, sobbed the Sister. I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky, grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws”
“So that’s when you cursed,” said the MS with a knowing smile.
“No, that wasn’t it either”, cried the Sister, anguished, “because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the Squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!”.
Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said,----------------------------------“You missed the F…… putt, didn’t you?”

On this day, 12th June 1964, ANC leader Nelson Mandela was one of eight activists sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage in Pretoria, South Africa. Mandela was sent to the notorious Robben Island, where he was held until February 11, 1990.
Wrinkles Something other people have. You have character lines.
A Hero’s journey for Xanana, and an eye-opener for us!
Jan and I were privileged, last Friday evening, to attend a dinner at ‘Dromoland’, where East Timor’s first lady Kirsty Sword-Gusmao was guest speaker, and afterwards, at Clonard College, for the screening of the film, ‘A Hero’s journey’ recounting East Timor’s struggle for independence, and Xanana Gusmao’s leadership as the new nation’s first President.
Kirsty was born in Melbourne, educated at Melb. University and Oxford and is married to Xanana with three young children. So, what do my readers know about East Timor?
This newest nation [2002] occupies about half the island of Timor, which is smaller than Tasmania, and lying off the north-west coast of Australia.
Portuguese territory until 1975, after which Indonesia invaded, and massacred one-quarter of the population,
[250,000 out of a total of 1,000,000] - and five Australian journalists. The capital, Dili, is as close to Darwin as Melbourne is to Sydney.!
East Timor suffers from political unrest, unbelievable poverty, [per capita income of $1 per day], lack of even minimal education facilities, hygene deficiencies, [not surprising, with an average of 8 children per family], domestic violence and 80% unemployment. Occupied by Indonesia for 24 years after the Portuguese departure, it gained independence in 2002 after three years of guerilla warfare, lead by Kirsty’s husband, Xanana Gusmao. An enlightening, but challenging evening!

How Lucky we are to live in this country!
Tonight’s guest speaker, Barbara Peek, teaches English to as many as 30 African refugee children at North Geelong Secondary College. Most have never been to school, seen a telly, fridge or any of the myriad modern conveniences we take for granted, worn shoes or have been free of the constant threat of sudden death or disease until they ‘won Tatts’ by having been selected to migrate to this ‘promised land’ of ours.
Many families have walked thousands of kilometers between countries until they are accepted into the most rudimentary of refugee camps, simply to survive.
No commentary can possible describe the squalor imposed on millions of disadvantaged children throughout equatorial Africa. Thank God for people like Barbara, a dedicated teacher and humanitarian. These children will stage an art show at the Torquay United Church for one week commencing next Sunday
