Duty Rosters for Alison’s Year

There are 7 members who will be excused duties, other than for their regular weekly commitments. They are
Fred Andrews, Norm Elliott, Geoff Ford, John Fox, Alison George, Rod Greer and James Turnbull.
To avoid appearing despotic on that matter, if any of the above want to be rostered, just let me know!

All other members will be rostered for Assistant Cashier & Thanker or Greeter & Assistant Sergeant, unless you can produce a medical certificate, or a note from your mother.
Seriously, though, many members seek leave of absence from time to time, and as I will not be on the Board to access that information, your advice to me of impending leave will enable me to leave you free of duties for any limited period. Even for short breaks such as annual holidays, give me advance warning and I will arrange your replacement, otherwise, it will be your responsibility to get a deputy, should you be rostered when inconvenient. Generally, chairmen will be selected to match the speaker or subject.

Frankly, the system did not work as well as it should last year, with rostered members simply not appearing and not apologising! If you need to miss a duty and can’t be bothered finding a replacement, phone me up to 4.00 pm Tuesday of the day of duty, and I will get one.

And on that note, and not wishing to be too critical, apologies for non-attendance MUST be lodged with Hans by noon Monday for any normal meeting. Don’t waste his time by phoning later. 3 did last week. If you do it this week, it could cost you $60. FAIR Dinkum! Apologies for next Tuesday must be in by noon Friday

Pity the poor migrants who have to learn English, and write it!!

e.g. * The bandage was wound around the wound.
* The farm was used to produce produce.
* We must polish the Polish furniture.
* He could lead if he could get the lead out. With thanks to Noel Emselle. More next week.

Hey, contributors; Please don’t e-mail me any pictures or long stories. They will not be included in my bulletins, or onsent. Sorry, but that’s my policy.

Why do women keep running their vacuum cleaner over a piece of string several times, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down again to give the vacuum cleaner another go?

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. – if they’re okay, then it’s you.

Vale Bob Grant

We mourn the passing of our late member and friend, who died at the age of 73 after a long illness. Bob joined the Highton Rotary club in April 1987 and served that club as secretary for two years. He joined our club in September 2003, but illness forced him to resign in June 2005. Bob was a lovely man and represented Australia in the javelin at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He leaves his wife, Judy, and three adult children.

The channel deepening Project

Let’s keep it all in perspective – The project is HUGE [$763m], but the proposed dredging will be in only 1% of the bay! So saith our guest speaker Sandra tonight, and she surely was eloquent, and convincing. Melbourne is already Australia’s busiest port, handling 38% of our nation’s sea cargo, at 2 million containers each 20 metres long, annually. But 38% of the visiting ships can’t get in, as they need more than the existing depth if fully laden. Port of Melbourne is currently restricted to vessels with a maximum draught of 11.6m, [12.1 at high tide]. Dredging to 14 metres will double our capacity to 4 million containers. The project, due to last two years, will employ 2300 in construction and at least 500 extra in operations. No long-term environmental effect is expected.

This day tonight

• We will finish Richard’s year with 50 members. Gained 9, lost 2. Two inducted next week.
• 7 members, led by the Waltons, shifted furniture to Annam Cara House last Saturday.
• The Greers and the Waltons also attended Surfside Primary yesterday and presented our $1000.
• We extend our sympathy to the Cullens on their loss of Annette’s sister Christine.
• Marion Walton won this week’s footy tipping prize with 5/8.
• We were represented at the Queenscliffe RC c/o night by Richard and Alison, and at Torquay by the Foxes.
• Remember Dennis Wooten? He is living at Portarlington, but is not very well.
• In my last bulletin for 2006/07, I must make mention of Geoff Brentnell. In all these past 51 weeks, Geoff has never failed to give me two weeks warning of forthcoming programmes, even when he was on the other side of the world for several weeks. And all of those programmes have been excellent.
• Spare a thought for Past Secretary Mark Donehue, who has been awarded an overseas study tour of USA and Canada. He and Nicole are currently deep in conference at Vancouver, but have found time to visit such delights as Disneyland, San Diego, Hollywood, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.
Mark will return in July to continue in his roll as head of Mandama Primary School.
