Alison was born at Ipswich, Qld., the second of two children, but the family moved to Colac when she was three.
Educated at the Apollo Bay consolidated school and Morongo College, Geelong, she commenced her long and distinguished nursing career at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, and gained her qualification in mid-wifery at the Brisbane Womens Hospital. Bowelscan 2007, some facts
Vic Harnath was one of several district Rotarians met with DG Andrew Suggett over lunch at ‘The Cats’ last Friday. 2007 was the largest programme in the 21 years it’s been running in our District.
17,588 kits were sold, well up on previous years. Completed kits were lodged at 163 pharmacies and four other facilities. 46 district clubs participated and 60 individual Rotarians contributed significantly to the project, including our Vic.
15,116 completed kits were tested at Pathcare by volunteer Rotarians and others. The medical coordinator dealt with 213 positive tests, [1.41%], and about 1/3 of those will be life-saving and/or life-changing for those people. Copies of the full fact sheet are available from your editor.

A letter to the editor from the bikies
After revelations that their members were out with Alan Didak, the Hells Angels have released a statement claiming that they had no knowledge that their members were mixing with Collingwood footballers and they will be launching a full investigation to find and suspend the members concerned.
“It is simply unacceptable and stupid behaviour for our members to be associating with these types of people. Our members are role models and should know better”, said the Club President.

Every Rotarian, every year
Don’t you get sick of constant mailed requests for donations, and even more irritated by the increasing incidence of telemarketing and phoned offers of raffle books for charities? Frankly, I wonder how much, out of our donation, is spent on all those administration costs, and just how much reaches the just cause?
You don’t have to worry about the admin. costs with the Rotary Foundation. All contributions go direct to the cause, as admin. expenses are entirely paid for out of investment earnings. About 10 of our members are in a program of the Rotary Foundation called ‘Every Rotarian Every Year’, a scheme to donate $100 in each of five consecutive years, thereby becoming a Centurian. Of course, it’s tax deductible. I can give you a brochure if you ask me, or I can lend you the clubs copy of the CD.

This Day Tonight
The Barwon Heads Golf Club is an excellent venue for a Rotary change-over night. Warm, friendly atmosphere, first class food and wine, and tonight, we had a total of 89 present, including visiting Rotarians and guests. Prominent among the visiting Rotarians were President Rod Stewart, PDG Henry [PHF] and Isobel [PHF] Hudson, and PP Frank Mountford. Our ADG Alan Ollis also attended and contributed to the conduct of the meeting with the inductions, the PHF presentations, and a brief address to the gathering. Also,
• Phil Edwards and Bruce Gilbert were inducted as our newest members. Both these fellows addressed the club and expressed their appreciation address for the invitation to join. They will be invited to tell us about themselves at a forthcoming meeting.
• Outgoing President Richard expressed his appreciation to his board members and other prominent members who contributed to the success of his year in office.
• Technology and audio/visual presentations were one of the features of Richards year, and we were treated to a review of the very successful visit in January by members of the Rotary Club of Southampton, Canada. I have the greatest admiration for Richard’s ability to combine Rod Greer’s still photos with Foxy’s video. I reckon it would have scored a hit with commercial TV!!
• Paul Harris Fellowships were presented to David Tyrrell and Colin Brown for their outstanding contributions to Rotary in general and this club in particular over many years.
• Outgoing Sergeant at Arms John Calnin handed over to James Turnbull, who proceeded to entertain us with ‘words without the music’, which was very well received.
• Marion Walton won this week’s footy tipping comp. with 7/8.
• Alison was then inducted as President for 2007/08, and thanked her fellow members for the honor. She proceeded to introduce her board members – Vice President-Geoff Chandler, Secretary Rod Greer, Treasurer Fred Andrews, President-Elect John Calnin, Service committees Richard Grimmett, Membership Trevor McArdle, and Rotary Foundation Geoff Brentnall. Other minor committee leaders also got a mention.
• All in all, it was a very good night.
• We express our sympathies to Elaine Elliott, whose mother died recently at the age of 93.
Another shot at our English Language Phil Edwards may appreciate this!
The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
