She–c.304a.d. was a prostitute in Augsburg, Germany, during the reign of Roman Emperor Diocletanius, who outlawed Christianity. A Spanish bishop, whom she tried to hide from the Emperor, converted her. She was caught and eventually burned to death.

Some more examples of why the English language is so hard to learn
They were too close to the door to close it.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
After a number of injections, my jaw got number.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

If you do not pay your annual subscription of $185 to Fred Andrews promptly, he will take such action as will cause you the utmost damned astonishment.
Mon Dieu! Contributed by President Keith Nixon from Canada
A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre. After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van.
However, he was captured only two blocks away, when his van ran out of petrol.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, “Monsier, that is the reason I stole the painting….I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh.”
Keith suggested that he should not have had De Gaulle to send that to us, but he figured that he had nothing Toulouse. Sgt. At Arms James wants Keith to send a nickel for the fines box!

Guest speaker Phil. Edwards [If Phil was in the U.S. army, they would call him a General]
Having reached the exalted rank of lieutenant in the CMF [1949-1956], I am mightily impressed with Phil, and I enjoyed his talk. His military career spanned 35 years.
Australia has about 4000 in the three armed forces serving overseas at any given time, and twice that number either in training or in transit. We all know they serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also East Timor, Solomons, Israel, Lebanon, the Sinai region, Egypt and the Sudan. There are another 450 on border control duties nearer home.
But over 15%, having been trained in various skills, leave any of the three services every year, and they are difficult to replace. For 4000 personnel overseas at any given time, the logistical problems are enormous.

Bits ‘n Pieces
• New member Bruce Gilbert will undergo open heart surgery at Geelong Hospital next week. We wish him a speedy recovery in recuperation at the Geelong Private.
• There will be a GST [Group Study Exchange] team to Denmark next March. A Danish team will be arriving and our club hopes to be a host.
• We may become involved in a joint project with RC Belmont. PP Tim Kemp also advises more DIK.
• If you want to be a member of ‘Geelong Friends of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’, see Foxy.
• For the umpteenth time, we were reminded tonight of our extreme carelessness in failing to apologise for non-attendance. Hans advised 6 recalcitrants. If that’s the average, it means that we are cheating the hotel of $6,000 every year!! [6X$20X50]
Amazing, that in a club of 50, we have about 10% convert to idiots every week. [ I initially used the word ‘dickheads’, but my proof reader thought that was over the top] But as Hans said, this is not directed at YOU, because the recalcitrants probably don’t read the bulletin anyway. Amen.
