An historical event

At 8.15 A.M. on August 6, 1945, an American B-29 called Enola Gay, flew over Hiroshima, Japan, and dropped an atomic bomb on the city. The bomb was called Little Boy, in reference to U.S. President Harry S Truman. In a flash, about 70,000 people were killed. Three days later, a further 70,000 were killed instantly when another bomb, called Fat Man, after British leader Winston Churchill, was unleashed on Nagasaki. These two events would instigate the end of World War 11.
Those bombs ushered in the atomic era, and much criticism has been levelled at the allies for what has been described as atrocities. It has been estimated that if the invasion of the Japanese mainland had become necessary to end the war, at least 1 million casualties would have resulted.

Blame Canadian Keith for this

Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent.

Don’t you just hate acronyms, particularly the ones you don’t understand? How about ROMAC?

Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children. Most countries in our region know of ROMAC services. Many of these countries are visited by Australian surgeons who volunteer their time to perform operations and train local surgeons. These surgeons frequently discover cases they can treat, but only with the equipment, facilities and support staff which exists in Australian hospitals. Such patients they refer to ROMAC.
Patients referred to ROMAC undergo a medical check in their own country to determine whether treatment by ROMAC is desirable and the results are reviewed by an Australian medical panel which includes all regional ROMAC medical officers and, frequently, surgeons will later be involved with the treatment of the case.
With finite resources, cases selected are limited to those with serious problems but which have the best chance of meaningful improvement in their lives.
Names of approved patients are passed to the operations area of ROMAC, where surgeons are found to undertake the operations. When treatment is arranged, the complex procedure of getting the patient to Australia is undertaken. In third world countries, it can be an incredible task just to locate the patient.

Contributed by Richard Groom, Secretary, Southern region ROMAC Committee.

Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted. A dyslexic man walks into a bra. Get it?

DG Ric Robertson

My proof reader told Ric that it was the best DG Speech she has listened to in her umpteen years in Rotary. Fair dinkum!
Ric mentioned Polio eradification, membership development and the continuing drought crisis as key emphasis in his year, and each of those matters have been reported in recent editions. I hesitate to be critical of members two weeks in a row, but there were only 9 partners present tonight, and that was poor support for our president. He also mentioned the fact that donations to the Rotary Foundation are tax-free and admin. costs free. Foxy can pas on your donations to the district chairman if you wish.
PDG Pat reported on literacy problems in young children, and DG Ric urged us to attend the District Conference in Swan Hill, 29/2/08 to 2/3/08.

The problem remains unsolved

The matter of no-shows, no apology will not be solved by my outburst last week, but I make no apologies for my language. Nothing else has worked!
I agonized about saying anything, and I am very conscious of the possibility that the supporters of my editorial style may become outnumbered by those who think I am simply a ‘pain in the arse’. However…….
My proof reader observed that some members and/or partners may say, “Here comes Jan Fox. She’s quite nice. I wonder how she came to marry him!!”
