One hundred years ago

Fascinating to note that 100 years ago this month, the Australian Government announced its intention to introduce into the Senate a Workmen’s Compensation Bill. [A forerunner of ‘Workcover?]

And it was recorded, on 27th October 1907, that a French aviator flew a flimsy aircraft 470 yards in a record 31 seconds. The two-decker A380 Airbus, now flies around the world with ease and carrying 600+ passengers.

On 15/10/1907, Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm 11 was awarded an honorary degree at Oxford University.

Sharing Rotary with new members

‘Are you aware of the responsibility or obligation most Rotarians fail to perform?

Paying their dues? Attending meetings? Contributing to the club’s charity funds? Participating in club events and projects? No – none of those. Of all the obligations a person accepts when joining a Rotary club, the one in which most Rotarians fail is ‘sharing Rotary’. Rotary International clearly supports the position that every individual Rotarian has an obligation to share Rotary with others and to help extend Rotary by proposing qualified persons for Rotary club membership.
It is estimated that less than 30% of the members of most Rotary clubs have ever made the effort to propose a new member. Thus, in every Rotary club, there are many Rotarians who rarely share their positive experiences of Rotary membership with other individuals.’

The above is part of an article headed “Sharing Rotary with new members” in the RI publication ‘The ABC’s of Rotary’ Personally, I think our record of ‘sharing Rotary’ is excellent, and I believe our effort in seeking new members is better than the 30% quoted, due largely I believe, to the efforts of Membership chairman Trevor McArdle. What do you think? The other half of the article will be printed next week.

• Guest Speaker Anna Portelli is an enthusiastic supporter of our Public Access Defibrillator programme as demonstrated by her duties as administrative officer at our local Surfside Centre since 2000.
Anna told us that 3500 people per week use the Centre –[WOW], and intensive training is available in the use of the unit, although, fortunately, no one has yet needed the facility.
As observed by Chairman Wal Kelly, we don’t seek usage of the six units we have installed in Ocean Grove, only the awareness by the public of their availability and location. Geelong CBD has none, except for the units available at the Hospitals, Ambulance etc, but they are hardly Public Access!
It is surely a case of ‘no use is good nuse’
