Letters to the editor

1 ‘You forgot another important anniversary for Nov. 11th. It was also the day Ned Kelly was hanged. The event was brought forward so the witnesses and officials could then get to the Melbourne Cup. So, not only was Ned not able to be at the Cup, he was also shortchanged on his hours of life’ Rodney Greer.
Ed. Comment. Who won?

2 ‘I’m sending a dirty email around in a few minutes regarding cost of meals and payment. The Hotel is going to charge the club for the number of meals booked. ……… Last week we had 5 “non-shows”. SecRod.
Ed. Comment. You have all been advised of this development, and frankly, I am sick of raising the same old subject. No previous appeals on the question of apologies have worked, and our record is appalling! We should debate this question. Personally, I believe the recalcitrants should PAY, without exceptions.

3 A 3-year-old boy examined his testicles while taking a bath.
“Mum”, he asked, “are these my brains?”
“Not yet,” she replied. Rodney Bush
Ed. Comment. Absolutely, no comment.

Ambassadorial Scholarships

Scholarship/Grant availability depends on our district’s contribution to the Rotary Foundation and which programs our district leadership chooses to support with available funds. Under the ‘Share’ system, all district general contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are totaled at the end of the year and then divided into two funds, with 50% being credited to the District Designated Fund, and the other 50% to the World Fund.
The World Fund is used by the Rotary Foundation to underwrite many of its programs, such as 3-H Grants, Matching Grants, Group Study Exchange, and many others, while the District Designated Fund may be used at the district’s discretion to participate in other Foundation programs such as Ambassadorial Scholarships or grants for University Teachers. The nature and extent of those grants will appear in next week’s bulletin.

Our nominee for an Ambassadorial Scholarship, Megan Bainbridge, was a guest at tonight’s meeting and she briefly addressed the club about her ambition to further her studies of Arabic at Cairo University.

If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.

Hong Trinh was tonight’s recipient of our 2007 Pride in Workmanship award.

Hong arrived in Australia in 1980, having left Vietnam in 1979 on a flimsy 12 metre boat with 52 others. They survived a monsoonal storm at sea, were attacked by pirates, [who stole all their money and possessions], were initially spurned by the Malaysians, where they arrived after 7 days, as illegal immigrants, and finally screened for acceptance into our country, but only after the Malaysians removed the boat’s engine, leaving the skipper with only a compass - that didn’t work. Hong admitted that he took his family back to Vietnam in 2001. I don’t think they went back by boat!

Hong and his very-much-respected family have lived in Ocean Grove for 26 fruitful and rewarding years, and Hong is clearly a very deserving recipient of the vocational service award. His was a most entertaining and well-received address to the club.

This Day Tonight

• Tim Kemp reported that he has recruited three members to serve on our division of the joint water project in the Philippines, but, probably for security reasons, their names have not been divulged.
• The November market is on next Sunday, so if you are rostered and can’t be there, phone Judy Greer or arrange your replacement.
• Geoff Brentnall and Noel Emselle have their eyes on a Bellarine Secondary student for an important Rotary award. Watch this space.
• We need five new members by change-over night to reach our target for PresAl’s year. Sponsers get a beaut Rotary badge and accolades from membership chairman Trevor!.
• PR boss Richard G is planning to have the location of our town’s Public Access Defibrillators recorded on the local community service directory signs.
• John Calnin and a small but energetic band of Rotary helpers staged a very successful golf day in aid of our Neighborhood House, and raised $2,600. Now THAT is service.
• Geoff Ford’s renovating crew at the DIK HQ in North Geelong appear to have run out of repairable bikes, and are about to turn their attention to beds. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be lying down on the job.
• We were served a Vietnamese main course tonight in honour of our guest speaker. Next week, we get chaff.
