Norma Jeane Mortensen died on 5th August, 1962. She would have been 82 if she was alive today. You may remember her as Marilyn Monroe. The coroner ruled her death was a suicide – overdose of sleeping pills.
There are many conspiracy theories surrounding her death. Eg. allegedly having an affair with JFK and in possession of info. on the White House which could bring down the administration if released. Or that the mafia had her knocked off in revenge for U.S. Attorney General and JFK’s brother Robert harassing them. [Marilyn was supposedly having an affair with him too.]. Perhaps, she simply died of exhaustion!
What is apparently fair dinkum, is that she was seeing her second husband, baseball star Joe DiMaggio before her death, and they planned to remarry. Joe sent flowers to Marilyn’s crypt for 20 years after her death and never married again.

Errata
Against dot point no. three on page two of last week’s bulletin, I stated that Geoff Chandler was slotted in to take Coral Barker’s place as temporary head of International Service. This has proved to be one of the shortest appointments in the history of our club, as he resigned from that position at 10.15 on the night of Friday 25th July, in favour of James Turnbull.
Well, that is a bit of a lie, as Geoff politely pointed out that I stuffed it up in the first place, as James was always the appointee. Anyway, it was very decent of Geoff to drive all the way into Geelong in the dead of night to lodge that advice.
Actually, I tried to blame my proof reader for the error, but she told me to go
Here endeth 10 lines of absolute rubbish, but it is at least 10 lines I don’t have to otherwise fill up!

Is the Melbourne Cricket Club the most sought after club in the world?
The latest MCC report states that there are 99,800 members as at 31/8/07, but an incredible 175,000 on the waiting list. I waited 22 years to become a member, and my Jan was nominated almost 20 years ago, but still can’t get into the hallowed members’ reserve for the AFL grand final.
Is this the first time you have ever been forced to turn to page 2 to find out if you are on duty in 2 weeks time?

On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered, bringing WW 11 to an end.
Six days after an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, nine days after Hiroshima, and three months after Adolph Hitler committed suicide, Emperor Hirohito announced to his people that Japan had surrendered to the Allies. His acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration brought to an end World War 11 – the deadliest war in history. Up to 62 million people died, mostly civilians, including 18 million Russians, 9 million Chinese, 6 million Poles, 2 million Japanese, 500,000 French, 400,000 British, 400,000 Americans, and 30,000 Australians.

The importance of paying your Rotary Subscription early
Easily the most costly item of expense for any Rotary club, is the half yearly costs for your club to remain a member of Rotary International, including district dues and subscriptions to ‘Rotary Down Under’. These charges fall due on 1st July. So if you haven’t paid your sub.of $185 by 31st July, you are placing great strain on the club funds and the Treasurer. I paid tonight [he said, smugly]

The Queensciff Harbour Development
Allan Cayzer was our guest speaker tonight, a very experienced and efficient operator, [unless I am very much mistaken]. His address and the slide presentation was very comprehensive and professional.
The visual feature will be a navigation aid tower, which will render redundant the existing lighthouses, and will straddle the proposed restaurant . The site of the development is owned by Parks Victoria, and Allan is the manager. Conceived in 2004, developed since 2006, and due to be opened in 2009, it will be a significant project for Queenscliff, ultimately employing between 70 – 100 staff and more, when completed and fully operational.
There will be 280 wet berths, 120 dry stack berths and accommodation for up to eight sizable boats for maintenance or refit. A pedestrian boardwalk will embrace the complex, which will feature a 27 metre high observation deck above dining, fresh fish retail store and gift shop. Boat repairs, construction and refitting facilities will continue to be a feature of the harbour.
There is already in use, a traveling lift for boats up to 150 tonnes.. Queenscliff is on the move, and so is Allan Cayzer, to whom we express thanks for a very good programme.
