At 5.00 pm. on 1st August 1944, the Polish Home Army rose up in an attempt to regain its capital, Warsaw, and end five years of brutal occupation by the Nazis. The Poles were counting on the advancing Russians to come to their aid, but it soon became apparent that they would receive no help from the Allies or the Russians.
Joe Stalin wanted Poland for Russia, and was counting on the Germans to crush any resistance to his plans.
The Germans used various tactics to break the uprising, including using female civilians as human shields in front of attacking tanks. They also went from house to house massacring civilians in their homes in an attempt to break the will of the insurgents without having to engage in heavy fighting. After 63 days and 200,000 casualties, and no chance of help from the allies, the Polish army surrendered. On January 17th,1945, the Soviets took Warsaw.

Norma Jeane Mortensen died on 5th August, 1962. She would have been 82 if she was alive today. You may remember her as Marilyn Monroe. The coroner ruled her death was a suicide – overdose of sleeping pills.
There are many conspiracy theories surrounding her death. Eg. allegedly having an affair with JFK and in possession of info. on the White House which could bring down the administration if released. Or that the mafia had her knocked off in revenge for U.S. Attorney General and JFK’s brother Robert harassing them. [Marilyn was supposedly having an affair with him too.]. Perhaps, she simply died of exhaustion!
What is apparently fair dinkum, is that she was seeing her second husband, baseball star Joe DiMaggio before her death, and they planned to remarry. Joe sent flowers to Marilyn’s crypt for 20 years after her death and never married again.

Rotary Projects Suggestion Box
Dick Clay “On my regular walks to the Tuckfield bend look-out, I often wonder why a shelter against sudden weather changes has not been erected. As this is no doubt a delightful spot, I am certain such a structure, incorporating perhaps a push button B.B.Q. or two would entice more and more people to enjoy this underdone spot.” Ed. Note; I have a belief that we put that, or similar, to Council a couple of years ago, and some residents in the row of houses to the north, and facing the ocean, objected.
Jan Fox “The Bellarine Peninsular hosts several art exhibitions, but, to my knowledge, no arts and crafts displays. There are many hobbyists in this district with great skills in many artistic areas, not just painting. I would be happy to head a committee to explore this prospect, possibly including partners of Rotarians and outsiders.”

This Day Tonight
Ian Russell, CEO, Ocean Grove Ambulance, graciously accepted our cheque for $3,000 towards the cost of essential equipment.
Rod Birrell, who is not sky-diving at present, urges members to recall significant community service projects to add to an already growing list.
Coral Barker, who talked about two elderly citizens out rowing up and down, is off to warmer climes, and has asked Geoff Chandler to temporarily assume International duties for the next 3 months.
If you plan to help Judy Greer on the Stephanie Alexander Gardens project, you need to complete a police check.
Richard Grimmett wants us all to remain enthusiastic about our involvement in the town’s 50th anniversary celebrations, over the weekend of 25/26 October.
Treasurer Fred Andrews is shocked to have to report that only 20% of members have paid their annual sub. of $185. If you have not coughed up by 15th August, he will be forced to take such steps as will cause you the utmost damned astonishment!
A bridge too far, from settlement
Barwon Heads pharmacist Bernard Napthine, chairman of the traders association and the BH bridge committee head, presented an intriguing story of 3.5 years of debate, government departmental indecision and local trader’s self-interest, mixed with passionate local debate when he recounted the story of the bridge replacement saga.
It started with Vicroads condemning the existing crossing all those years ago, and little real progress appears to have been made in settling the issue.
The removal of the existing structure seems inevitable, and a new bridge at the extension of the Geelong road, well upstream of the old bridge, seems to we OG residents, [and Bernard] to be a logical proposition, but not to the majority of the B-Headers.
The current proposition is to reject the above option and construct a ‘shandy’ of part old, part new, but six metres south. We must ask Bernard back in ten years or so, to find out how the debate is going. Quo Vadis.
