On 23rd July 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie, [Charles Stewart], landed in Scotland at Eriksay, with only eight supporters. He raised an army, which was eventually defeated by English forces at the Battle of Culloden on April 16th, 1746. Evading capture, he finally returned to France on September 26, after holidaying in Rome.

Actually, there is a postscript to all this, as Jan and I were at nearby Inverness in 1990, and read the complete story of Charlie’s little foray into history. Flora McDonald helped him escape and served time in the Tower of London for her troubles. And do you know that Charlie lived to a ripe old age, but never wrote to her, or even phoned or sent an e-mail. Ungrateful bugger!

Post-post script.  The Battle of Culloden was the last battle fought on British soil.

At 5.00 pm. On 1st August 1944, the Polish Home Army rose up in an attempt to regain its capital, Warsaw, and end five years of brutal occupation by the Nazis. The Poles were counting on the advancing Russians to come to their aid, but it soon became apparent that they would receive no help from the Allies or the Russians.
Joe Stalin wanted Poland for Russia, and was counting on the Germans to crush any resistance to his plans.
The Germans used various tactics to break the uprising, including using female civilians as human shields in front of attacking tanks. They also went from house to house massacring civilians in their homes in an attempt to break the will of the insurgents without having to engage in heavy fighting. After 63 days and 200,000 casualties, and no chance of help from the allies, the Polish army surrendered. On January 17th,1945, the Soviets took Warsaw.

If you are claustrophobic or have a fear of heights, this is the way to get to Adelaide

We got the idea from Geoff & Jan Chandler, and Jan and I took the ‘Overland’ from North Shore Geelong to Adelaide last Thursday, returning yesterday. It’s the same Company that runs the Indian Pacific and The Ghan, but your travel agent can provide a range of fares and travel options. Departs North Shore Geelong, 0947 and takes about 9 hours to Adelaide via Ararat, Horsham, Murray Bridge and the Adelaide Hills. The leg-room is about twice that of an aircraft, the seats [only 3 across] equally comfortable, and the scenery is lush and green at present through large picture windows. Breakfast, morning and afternoon teas and lunch available. We gave it top marks, and the greatest height is Mt. Lofty Station. It stops briefly at about 5 stations. No queues, security checks or long walks to the departure lounge!

The Perks of being 70 or more

Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
In a hostage situation, you are likely to be released first.
People who phone at 9.00 pm ask, “Did I wake you?”.
People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

Fifty years of Rotary growth

As of 1st July 1958, there were 9,878 Rotary clubs containing 464,000 Rotarians. Compare that with  32,841 Rotary clubs and 1,205,518 Rotarians today. Ponder, that in 1958, the first underwater transpolar navigation was accomplished by a nuclear powered submarine, an under-ice voyage equivalent to the breadth of Australia. Fifty years from now, there probably won’t be any polar icecap!

A message from JC
    *    The ‘Super Sprint’ people have expressed thanks for our duties on the day. We remain available!
President John would like habitual ‘late arrivals’ to make a special effort from time to time to provide us with the pleasure of their company for a social chat before our meeting starts.
Many suggestions have been put forward for community projects, and some w ere mentioned at the foot of last week’s bully. Add to those – A rotunda in the Park, support to a RC in a drought area, a boardwalk near the OG golf course, a joint project with the OG Community Ass’n  for a cycling/ walking track, information and map boards, toilets at the OG park, improvements at the lookout, indigenous student support. All these have been referred to the Board meeting, and more suggestions are sought.
JC also reminds members that the club seeks photos to embellish our 25th anniversary celebrations.
Notice Board
    *    Geoffrey Cummins ,[kitchen Supplies] became our 4th new member in 7 days, surely, a record.
Our Rotary district seeks a volunteer to serve on the District Drought Relief Committee. Please volunteer to Secy. Vic.
Because chairman [I hate the term ‘chairperson’] Coral Barker will be absent for three months, an International Service Committee meeting will be deferred until November. However, she told us where the key is hidden, but your bulletin editor can’t remember to what or why!
Judy Greer can supply lots of assorted Rotary apparel, except bras.
Phil Edwards is achieving great prospects with his ‘market sponsorship’ drive. Watch this space!!

Friends of the Marine Discovery Centre
I cannot possibly do justice to Noel Emselle’s power point presentation tonight, but if you didn’t take one of the Education Program folders, get one from Noel, as it is excellent and we should all have some knowledge of this prominent local facility. We all know it is located on the shores of Swan Bay, and if any of you haven’t visited, you must. Even better, become a ‘Friend’.
I am appalled that it is not open at weekends, except in school holidays.   Bureaucratic idiocy!
