The Manson Family Murders
On a hot August night in 1969, young movie actress Sharon Tate was eight months pregnant and living in a secluded Los Angeles mansion. Her husband, film director Roman Polanski, was away shooting a film, and Tate invited three friends for an impromptu gathering. When the Polanski’s housekeeper arrived the next morning, she discovered the gruesome murders of Tate and her friends.
In November that year, while in prison in connection with a car theft, a woman named Susan Atkins, boasted to an inmate that she was responsible for the murder of Sharon Tate. Under police questioning, she named her accomplices as Charles ‘Tex’ Watson,, Patricia Krenwinkel and Linda Kasabian, All members of a cult known as The Family, led by self-styled guru Charles Manson. Atkins led Police to other murders committed by Family members.
Manson never killed any of his victims himself. He persuaded his followers to embark on the murder sprees of wealthy people in their homes and cast suspicion on black militant groups such as the Black Panthers. Seven months after the trial began, the jury took nine days to find Manson and his followers guilty, and they were sentenced to death, but in 1972, the California Supreme Court abolished the death penalty and all sentences were automatically commuted to life terms.

ROTASTAT         Facts about Malaria
A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds.      More than one million people die of malaria every year.  About 40% of the world’s population is at risk of malaria.    Malaria is both preventable and curable.     More than 500 million people become severely ill with malaria every year. Most cases and deaths are in sub-saharan Africa, but Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and parts of Europe are also affected..
Osama and George
Osama Bin Laden decided to send George Bush a letter in his own handwriting to let him know he was still alive. On opening the letter, George discovered it contained a single line of the following coded message;
37OH-SSV-0773H
George was baffled, so he e-mailed it to Condoleeza Rice. Condo and her aides hadn’t a clue either, so they sent it off to the FBI. Equally stumped, they sent it off to the CIA, then MI6 and Mossad.
Eventually ASIO was asked for help, and within a few moments, they e-mailed the White House with this reply:       “Tell the President he’s holding the message upside down”

The Rotary-NO-Tomo

That is the name of the regional Rotary magazine for Japan, the equivalent of our ‘Rotary Down Under’. Shigeyuki Furuno, our friend and former exchange student of 1975, sent us a copy [in Japanese], of the edition which included an account of he and his wife Atsuko’s return visit to Australia in June/July last year, and then we also received an English text version.
The magazine, like ours, contains summaries of projects undertaken by Japanese clubs, and your editor has decided to reproduce some of those articles to demonstrate what our sister clubs are undertaking.
‘Charity Auction – Joining forces nets fabulous results
The Rotary Club of Tokyo Ginza sponsored a charity auction on February 20 2008. The site for the auction, necessary preparations and items to be auctioned were all provided by club members, with several members of the Rotaract Club of Tokyo Chuo, sponsored by Tokyo Ginza, turning out to lend a hand- truly a joining of forces.
With club members themselves acting as auctioneers, the room was soon buzzing with excitement resulting in every last item being sold and proceeds far exceeding expectations. Using the money earned from the auction, the club, as a community service project, donated 30 wheelchairs [more than originally intended] to Chuo Ward in Tokyo, as well as a gift of money to Banyan Home Foundation, an organization providing aid to children in Thailand who have lost their parents due to AIDS. The ward expressed its gratitude, saying the wheelchairs will be a great help to care workers. A note of thanks was also received from the Foundation.
By joining together the spirit and strength of all its members, the club was able to conduct such a fruitful community service activity – one worthy of commemorating its 50th anniversary.’
