Notable World Events in the week ahead [that was]
Bloody Sunday – and Bloody stupidity January 30,1972.
On this day, 37 years ago,14 unarmed men and boys were shot dead and 13 others wounded after British paratroopers opened fire on Roman Catholic and civil rights marchers in the Bogside area of the city of Londonderry in Northern Ireland. The march was called to protest against internment without trial.
Most of the marchers followed the organizers instructions and turned right into Rossville Street to hold a meeting at Free Derry Corner. However, a section of the crowd continued along William Street to the British Army barricade, where a riot developed.
Confrontation between the Catholic youth of ‘Derry and the British Army had become a common feature of life in the city, and many observers reported that the rioting was not particularly intense. An order was given for the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment to move into William Street to arrest rioters. As aggression towards the troops mounted, and despite a cease-fire order from British Headquarters, soldiers fired more than 100 rounds into the crowd.
Bloody Sunday overshadows most other violent instances in the history of troubles in Northern Ireland because it was carried out by the forces of the British Government and not by paramilitaries. When it arrived in Northern Ireland, the British Army had been welcomed as a neutral force, there to protect Catholics from Protestants and vice-versa.
In Ireland for many decades, the term Bloody Sunday evoked a memory of November 21,1920, when 14 British secret service men were simultaneously killed by the Irish Volunteers in their Dublin homes. In retaliation, Auxiliary police killed 12 spectators and players, and injured 60 others at a Dublin football match.
In 1987, the RC of Robinvale hosted a Group Study Exchange team from Ireland, 3 from the’South’, 3 from the’North’. It was a huge success. Jan and I visited them in 1990, returning home with a fund of funny stories

Another Rotary project extracted from the Rotary-No-Tome magazine [Japan]
Shopping bags and the environment The Rotary Club of Hashima
Recently there has been a growing concern in Japan for ways in which to combat global warming and make better use of our natural resources. One of the things being done concerns those shopping bags and grocery bags that stores use to put your purchases in. More and more stores are now charging the customer for them, or alternatively, offering a fixed discount for not using one, and in this way are working to reduce the number of bags being used. Likewise, it is becoming increasingly popular for consumers to bring their own bags with them in an effort to reduce reliance on store-provided ones.
For its 40th anniversary commemorative project, the Rotary Club of Hashima decided to give this trend a bit of a boost and get people to be a little more environment friendly in their daily lives by sponsoring a shopping bag contest. The club supplied canvas bags which participants then decorated with pictures and other designs. There were over 500 entries in all, ranging from kindergarten children to adults, reflecting the community’s concern for protecting the environment. Entries were judged by club members and the best were chosen. The club held its anniversary ceremony on May 11 2008 at which time the winning bags were displayed and awards were presented.

A balmy evening, surely within 1 degree of perfect
The annual January evening at Alison George’s is one of the social highlights of our Rotary year, and tonight was one of the best. About 50 Rotarians and partners were joined by about 50,000 ants, but they didn’t eat much, and those that came in thongs or sandals and otherwise bare legs, were able to do an impromptu ‘evening freestep’ to their tune. Semens Science Summer School delegate Camden Tilley provided a brief but enthusiastic report on our sponsorship, and we had pre-dinner ‘nibbles’ which very nearly persuaded us that we didn’t need a two course dinner to follow, but not quite!.
We thank you Alison for a truly great night. It can hardly be denied that we are a very compatible lot.
