Tennis would surely have to be the most effective sport to televise.

It was a great spectacle, particularly from the comfort of an airconditioned lounge room. Almost as absorbing next January, at least for me, will be to see the further development of the Australian girls, who have been strangely absent in recent years, and whether a certain Spanish competitor can break his own record for tugging his shorts [or is it his longs?] out from the cheeks of his bum.
Could I recommend to our International Service committee that we donate him half a dozen pairs of underpants.

Meet the Canadian GSE team on Sunday, 15 February

This is an opportunity for the Rotary clubs of Ocean Grove and Queenscliffe to meet the incoming team for a purely social day, and Marion will provide more details next Tuesday, 10th Feb.
In summary, the team will take in the sights of both towns after breakfast, and members of both our clubs will be invited to join in.
In the evening, we can join them for ‘Music in the Geelong Botanical Gardens’ commencing at 6.00PM. Finish 7.30. Bring food, drink and chairs. Music provided by a swing/ Jazz combo.

Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white?

TOUCHE

The following is portion of an ABC broadcast by a female interviewer [FI] and our General Cosgrove [GC], who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military  headquarters-.

FI  “So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?”
GC “ We’re going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting”.
FI  “Shooting! That’s a bit irresponsible, isn’t it?”
GC  “ I don’t see why, they’ll be properly supervised on the rifle range.”
FI  “Don’t you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?”
GC  “I don’t see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.”
FI  “But you’re equipping them to become violent killers.”
GC  “Well, Ma’am, you’re equipped to be a prostitute, but you’re not one, are you?”     Keith Nixon, Ca.

To celebrate the start of the new school year, ponder this!

A first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part where CL  warns the farmer……’and Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said’, “the sky is falling!”. The teacher then asked the class “and what do you think that farmer said?” One little girl shot up her hand and said, “I think he said, ‘Holy shit, a talking chook!”                                                                        Robin Stevens, UK

A tale of two cities – club projects on Sunday 1st Feb. ; No.1 The triathlons at Portarlington, from 0545

16 members attended this paid project, before dawn, with another two in reserve not needed. Two swim/ ride /run events, - the Brooks, 300m, 10km, 3km [loosely described as the amateur event], and the more fair dinkum Gatorade, 800m, 26km, 8km, won by Brent Schuster of Mt. Eliza. 4 of our mob were on supplies, and the other 12 on ‘putting on and taking off’.
This latter task involved textraing the entry number on the right upper arm and thigh of each entrant, plus a further identification on the calf of the ‘pros’. The ‘taking off’ involved removing the transponder device from the ankle of the finishers. We had plastic gloves for the removal job, but paradoxically, not for the ‘putting on’. We each got a beaut showbag of goodies, a t-shirt size S and a free copy of the ‘Sun’. For our five hours artistic duties, we each got $40 [no tax], for our club.

A tale of two cities, No. 2 ; The craft and produce market at Kingston park, Ocean Grove, from 0800.

Another 16 members performed in various capacities to support 86 sites, 650 cars, $256 in raffle proceeds and $806 in voluntary donations at the front gate.
Comparisons are of course, odious, but I can recall a market manager in the mid-nineties who vehemently refused to contemplate an entry fee or parking charge on the grounds of inconvenience, possible customer objection and a variety of other disadvantages, none of which have been realized. Silly old bugger! More than $2200 raised from gate takings in three markets, clearly proves him wrong.

Stuart Willsher, Parks Victoria Ranger/ team leader for the Bellarine Peninsular, was an outstanding speaker
There are at least 7 parks of concern for Stuart’s team, but Barwon river/ Lake Connewarre is the main focus and was the feature of a power point presentation. It is the of considerable concern, with three bird varieties being the subject of protection agreements with China and Japan.. 23 interested organizations are concerned with that area, and there are many conservation projects which need urgent attention. Extensive raised walkways are probably in a cost range beyond our club’s financial resources, but there is no reason why we couldn’t get our collective hands dirty with the white mangrove plantings. We need a project like that!
