Well, we knew they claim Phar Lap as their very own, but now it’s the Pavlova!
The Oxford reference dictionary gives it one brief line – ‘A meringue cake with cream and fruit’. An adjoining note refers to a Russian dancer with the same name, but we Aussies have always claimed the ‘pav.’ to be the invention of Perth chef Bert Sachse on October 3, 1935. Well, he wasn’t, and it isn’t!
Keith Money, a biographer of the dancer with the same name, is reported in last Friday’s ‘Age’ as stating categorically, that a chef in a Wellington hotel created the dish in 1926, and a recipe for a pavlova appeared in a 1933 edition of the Rangiora Mothers’ Union cookery book. So there!
But the damned Kiwis can’t claim the origin of our great national dish – ‘The Floater’, which, as you all know [don’t you?] is a meat pie floating in a bowl of pea soup! Smack, drool.

A report on last Friday’s Seafoodfest at Queenscliff
You’ve got to hand it to ‘Fordie’. He had 8 of our mob promoting Queenscliff’s biggest event overseas last Friday morning – 2 return trips on the ferry, where they sold about $8000 in tickets. 14 more distributed fish, chips and salad to a multitude, and channel 7 filmed us doing it! Full reports are still to come, but the Childrens’ Hospital will benefit from takings of $115,000!

Laughter not always the best medicine
“Of course I won’t laugh, I’m a professional nurse. In more than 20 years, I’ve never laughed at a patient”.
“Okay then,” Fred from Leongatha said and proceeded to drop his trousers, revealing the tiniest male appendage the nurse had ever seen. Length and width, it couldn’t have been bigger than a AAA battery.
Unable to control herself, the nurse started giggling, then almost fell to the floor laughing. A few minutes later, she was able to regain her composure.
“I’m so sorry”, said the nurse. “I don’t know what came over me. On my honor as a nurse and a lady, I promise it won’t happen again. Now tell me, what seems to be the problem?”
“It’s swollen”, Fred replied. Things went downhill from there. From ‘Blowflies and Bulldust’

Final market for season 2008/09
104 sites, 1475 cars, $221 in the raffle, $1,531 at the gate, and a net profit for the season of $18,488. Phil Edwards and all of the members who contributed to that outstanding result, can be well proud of their efforts. ************

Veterinary surgeon and respected member John Paton presented an absorbing and enlightening address on his vocation of 35 years. Originating, in its admittantly primitive form, around 350 BC, veterinary skills were originally confined mainly to horses, and it was the late 1870’s before formal Vet. Schools were established in Europe and subsequently in Melbourne on 3rd March 1909. Originally mirrored by the value of the animals treated, veterinary science was not the fairly affluent profession that it is today, but modern techniques, specialization and media identities such as James Herriott, Hugh Worth and Harry Cooper have helped lift the image and reputation of the profession. Many popular images of certain breeds of dogs were scotched by John. e.g. Even pit bull terriors are not born savage:
