I meant to join the Apathy Association, but I couldn’t be bothered.
Rotary by the numbers

As at the end of the last calendar year, there were 1,220,413 Rotarians worldwide in 33,260 Rotary clubs spread over 534 Rotary districts. There were 171,856 Rotaract members in 7,472 Rotaract clubs and 272,918 Interact members in 11,886 Interact clubs.

Rotary bulletin editors should steer clear of politics, religion and sex                  But I can’t help myself
Last Thursday’s Melbourne ‘Age’ splashed the headline “Another boat arrives, an eighth on its way”, no doubt aiming to convince us that we are about to be ‘invaded’ by asylum seekers. On page 17 of the same publication, Kim Beasley, in an article headed ‘Let’s not rock the boat on border security’, states “Let’s put this in perspective. Last year, 13,000 arrived by boat in Spain, 36,000 arrived in Italy, 2,700 in tiny Malta. In Yemen, 50,000 people arrived from Somalia. A few weeks ago, a tragedy at sea off the Spanish coast claimed 400 lives. In the year to date in Australia, we have experienced 263 arrivals. Obviously, it cannot be said that the Australian route is a favoured one. To attempt to create a sense of crisis out of this speaks volumes about the characters of the perpetrators in the opposition and the shallowness of the media.”
I meant to join the Procrastination Society but I never got round to it.

94 years later, Anzac day is still remembered

The dawn service last Saturday at the Ocean Grove Cenotaph was, as usual, well presented and well attended. Rotary was again prominent, and past president Helen Trigg, resplendent in her officer’s uniform of the Australian Naval Cadets, represented our president John Calnin by laying Rotary’s wreath at the foot of the cenotaph, while John led his team of 15 in serving 180 breakfasts to many of the approximately 250 locals in attendance.

The following was sent to us by PP Keith Nixon from Canada via the ‘Yahoo’ pathway of the internet
And it took 5 pages of A4 ‘computerspeak’ to convey the following 8-line story!

‘Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint.
Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.
The first patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has surgery booked for the following week.
The second sees his family doctor after waiting three weeks for an appointment, then waits eight weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn’t reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for six months hence. Why the different treatment for the two patients?
The first is a Golden Retriever.                              The second is a Senior Citizen.’

‘Mind your P’s and Q’s
In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts, so, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them “Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down”. That’s where we get the phrase “Mind your P’s and Q’s”         I’m not sure if that’s fair dinkum, and I’ll ask me mate Robin.

Past Rotarian and OG Rotary club member John Moore was tonight’s guest speaker

John is an intelligent and articulate speaker, and he was named as a marriage celebrant in our pre-meeting notice. What he spoke about was same-sex couples and suicides in the under-30’s age group, clearly linking the two groups.
Your bulletin editor greatly enjoys writing this little weekly two-page rag, but he recognizes his obvious weakness of experience in this complex field, and unhesitatingly concedes that he is editorially and intellectually ill-equipped to comment on that subject or to do John’s address justice.
