VOL 28 NO. 2

 6th July 2010

A sad start to Noel's year as our President

Noel's mother Caroline [Carrie] Mary Emselle, 'Brown Owl' to her Guiding associates, died last Thursday, 1st July, aged 97, and we express the club's deepest sympathy to Noel and his family. A funeral service will be held at the Ocean Grove Uniting Church, cnr. Eggleston St. and The Parade, tomorrow, Wednesday, July 7 at 11.00am. Private cremation to follow; donations to support local guiding in lieu of flowers.

This Day Tonight

The highlight of tonight's meeting was the induction of our newest member Ann Hodgkinson, D.Ec., recently retired Assoc. Professor of Economics at Wollongong University, and grandmother of Cody, who attended our meeting tonight in the care of his mother Ami. Ann makes us 9 ladies & 45 men.
And on the subject of Cody, members are urged to attend a Family Fun Day for Cody and Ami at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Sunday 25th July from 12 noon to 4pm – just $10 for a family ticket, and there was surely never a better cause. Cody is just 3 and has a rare and aggressive eye cancer, with a secondary tumour in his cheek and as if that is not enough for the poor little bloke, the cancer has spread to his bone marrow. I appeal to all members to be there.
We let our newest President down with tonight's club assembly. It was given two weeks notice, but only Bill Walton had a useful report to present. A further working bee is planned for the lookout reserve, and a toilet and rotunda are planned.
In my humble, but fairly comprehensive experience, we are not conducting committee meetings effectively. They should not be held at regular club meetings, but at the homes of committee chairmen, where a proper debate and uninterrupted discussion can take place. At least the new Board of Directors has the message!. Next week's board meeting will be held in the Board Room at Club Grove.
DIK HQ has a surfeit of computers and need no more, [unless they are laptops.]
Unchanged annual subs. of $185 are due to the treasurer. You can pay half-yearly if you wish.
2011 District Conference accommodation deposits of $50 are due to Rod Greer.
We urgently need a new home for our Rotary gear.

If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

Three fascinating, but otherwise quite useless pieces of information

The ancient Egyptians were the first to establish a 365-day year.
Gustave Eiffel originally intended to build his famous tower in Barcelona for the 1888 Universal Exposition, but his idea was rejected.
Jimmy Carter was the first US President to be born in a hospital.

Notes from PDG Chris. Sims final newsletter

The monthly attendance reports were reinstated for the June newsletter. Ocean Grove had the 8th largest membership of the 61 clubs in District 9780 as at 30th April, and had an average attendance for April  of 75%. The district had 2064 Rotarians at that date, down 14 since 1/7/2009.

A Play on Words [for want of a better word] I thought there was a special word or phrase to denote this sort of thing, but I couldn't  recall it, so I phoned a couple of schoolies who live across the water, and they racked  their brains overnight but failed to come up with the answer, and neither could my brother-in-law in Mildura – former mayor, solicitor, good with words 'n stuff, but obviously not with instant recall of remote aspects of the English language, and then I thought of all the academics in our club so I will now give you an example of the thing which gave rise to the question in the first place, and perhaps some real smart bugger will know what the' handle' is.

'Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. Unfortunately, all the Swiss league records were destroyed in a fire,…..so we'll never know for whom the Tells bowled.'

And, another one for good measure……

'A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official who apologized profusely saying, "I must have taken Leif off my census."

Literacy Resource Group 2010-2011

PDG Bob Furner is the D9780 Chairman for this Rotary year, and asks our club to nominate a contact person for this district committee. This is an important task for Rotary, and new RI President RayKlinginsmith regards the program as one of his major international projects. Any of our members willing to serve on this committee is asked to consult with President Noel. Bob can provide further details by e-mailing furner2@bigpond.net.au

Tipping news

Gary was tops in round 14 with 8/8. Bill W still leads, but only by 3 from Gary, with Noel & Geoff next.

The education of Paul Harris wasn't all plain sailing!

It is almost a relief to read that Paul also had some human failings.Paul's parents had a troubled marriage, and his education was organised by his grandfather Howard. Paul completed primary level education in his home town of Wallingford, and Howard then sent him to the Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont, from which he was expelled because of his tendency towards 'pranks'!

Paul was then enrolled in the Vermont Military Academy, where he did well and earned admission to the University of Vermont in 1886. 18 months later, he was wrongly accused of misconduct and was expelled. Many years later, the University apologised and conferred on him  a B.A. in physical Culture in 1919 and an honorary Ph.D in 1933. In that year, Paul was admitted to prestigious Princeton University in New Jersey.
