Three fascinating, but otherwise quite useless pieces of information
· Christopher Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas. He had to abandon his 1492 voyage when his ship ran aground, and didn’t get there until 1498 – by which time others had beaten him to it.
· Mozart wrote his first piece of music when he was just five years old!
· 12 million African slaves were taken to the Americas before the trade was banned in 1808.
A horrible tale of gluttony, false identity and murder most foul! ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf’
‘As soon as wolf began to feel that he would like a decent meal, he went and knocked on Grandma’s door.
When Grandma opened it she saw, the sharp white teeth, the horrid grin, and Wolfie said ”May I come in?”
Poor Grandmamma was terrified, “He’s going to eat me up”, she cried. And she was absolutely right.
He ate her up in one big bite. But Grandmamma was small and tough, and Wolfie wailed, “That’s not enough!
I haven’t yet begun to feel that I have had a decent meal!” He ran around the kitchen yelping, “ I’ve got to have a second helping!” Then added with a frightful leer, “I’m therefore going to wait right here, till little Miss Red Riding Hood comes home from walking in the wood”. He quickly put on Grandma’s clothes [of course he hadn’t eaten those]. He dressed himself in coat and hat. He put on shoes and after that, he even brushed and curled his hair, then sat himself in Grandma’s chair.
In came the little girl in red. She stopped, she stared, and then she said, “What great big ears you have, ,Grandma”. “All the better to hear you with,” the Wolf replied. “What great big eyes you have, Grandma,” said little Red Riding Hood. “All the better to see you with,” The Wolf replied.
He sat there watching her and smiled. He thought, I’m going to eat this child. Compared to her old Grandmamma, she’s going to taste like caviar.
The little girl smiles. One eyelid flickers. She whips a pistol from her knickers, she aims at the creatures head, and bang bang bang, she shoots him dead. Contributed by ROALD DAHL
Now then, if youse want to read the sequel to this horrid tale, watch this space next week.
A Play on Words [for want of a better word]
Rod Greer thought it might be a ‘Spoonerism’, but I think Geoff Neilson might be nearer the mark with ‘Malapropism’! – The unintentional misuse of a word by confusion with one that sounds similar. Another suggestion was ‘Paronomasia’ or ‘pun’ – a form of word play which exploits the ambiguity of a statement, allowing it to be understood in multiple ways for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect. The End.
From the Church News [identity of the church advised, but withheld]
The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. Fair dinkum!
From the history of Rotary
The third meeting of the new group was held at the coal-yard office of Silvester Schiele on 23rd March, 1905. There were 15 men present and it was the first business meeting at which important decisions as to their future were taken, some of them still in force today.
The first question addressed was what they should call themselves. Some members felt the club should reflect their community. Windy City Roundup, Chicago Fellowship, Chicago Circle, The Lake Club and The Chicago Civic Club were amongst the names proposed. Others argued the name should have a business ring to it, such as The Booster Club, Friends in Business, Men with Friends, The FFF [Food-Fun-Fellowship] Club & The Trade and Talk Club.
None of these names generated much enthusiasm, but Paul Harris quietly made a new suggestion. They had already agreed to rotate meetings between members’ places of business, with the leadership of each meeting also rotating to the man hosting that meeting. Why not call themselves ‘The Rotation Club’? They knew they were onto something, but the name sounded a bit clumsy. “How about Rotary Club then?” suggested Paul.
The name was unanimously approved
Another one of those things
A man rushed into a busy doctor’s office and shouted, “ Doctor, I think I’m shrinking!” The doctor calmly responded, “Now, settle down. You’ll just have to be a little patient.”
