20th July 2010
LET’S BE THERE FOR CODY!
As previously reported, a special day for little Cody Strahan will be held at the Ocean Grove Hotel, next Sunday, 25th July, from 12 noon to 4pm. A brief description of Cody’s condition was reported on the front page of this bulletin on 6th July, and is also featured in the current edition of ‘Ocean Grove Voice’. Cody was present with his mother Ami for the induction as our newest member, [and his grandmother], Ann Hodgkinson at our meeting on that evening.
The poor little fellow has a terrible ordeal ahead of him, and the financial burden will also be horrendous. I challenge all of our members and their partners to be there, if only for a few minutes, to lend our support, to donate generously, and to show a cheerful and lovely little fellow that we really do care.
This Day Tonight
· President Noel reported that Geoff Eglin holds the solution to the club’s storage problems, encouraged members to follow in Heather’s example with the Rotary Leadership Institute, and advised Bob Smith’s rather grim destiny.
· Secy. Vic. [rather laconically in my humble opinion] reported a Fed. Gov. grant to our club for infrastructure maintenance and administrative budgetry requirements, and a COGG grant for Lookout reservationery expenditure. The applause was, at best, desultory! Our club has come a long way when the announcement of $14,000 in Fed. Government and Local Government support attracts only casual interest!
· John Eyles seeks nominations for the ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award, and Richard Trigg also had something interesting to announce but he didn’t seek the roaming mike, so I didn’t hear it!
· Volunteer for your favourite duty at the 2010/11 market season, or Geoffrey Cummins will convert you from a volunteer to a conscript.
· Ingrid Cummins seeks sponsors for the 2011 Art Show.
· Footy tipping guru Gary Golding Free of the cancer spectrum, [to loud cheers and similar celebrations from us all], reported Heather Wallace as this weeks [dare I say unlikely] winner of the ‘fourpenny dark’ for picking a miserable 5/8!! Bill Walton [90], leads by 3 from Gary G, Rod Bush is tail-end-charlie on 74, and the rest of us are in the muddle. Dick Clay scored 3 due to computer failure, and Fordie also got 3 from half the continent away by default, but if he had been local at the time of selection, would still have only got 3 on selection. Your editor was equal 5th with 4.
· Tony McCaffrey was our guest speaker tonight, on the subject of remedial massage. His patients mainly have back problems, with which is associated pain, lack of mobility, and inflexibility. Prominent in this specialist field are the Victorian Fitness Academy and the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Facility. Tony name-dropped Jana Pitman [Rawlinson], Matthew Lloyd, James Hird and Tim Watson’s groin.
Three fascinating, but otherwise quite useless pieces of information
· All of Queen Anne of Great Britain’s 18 children died before the age of 12.
· Legendary American Olympic Gold-medallist sprinter Jesse Owens died of lung cancer after smoking for 35 years.
· Marilyn Monroe worked in an aeroplane factory before she became famous.
The sequel to that horrible tale of gluttony, false identity and murder most foul!. By Roald Dahl
A few weeks later, in the wood,
I came across Miss Riding Hood.
But what a change! No cloak of red,
No silly hood upon her head.
She said, ”Hello, and do please note
My lovely furry WOLFSKIN COAT”.
“You are likely to get some flack from your fellow members over that”, commented my proof reader on perusing my first draft. “What has Roald Dahl got to do with Rotary?”
“Absolutely nothing”, I replied. “He doesn’t even get a mention in the RI list of the 100 most prominent Rotarians!”.
Last year, leading up to the district conference, Richard Grimmett and I discussed the prospect of us winning the district award for best club bulletin. Alas, the result was akin to ‘The Cats’ failing to make the ‘final eight’. So, this year, we are heartened by District Governor Jessie Harman’s donation of a new award ‘The District 9780 Website Award’, and we used a reproduction of a [sort of] nursery rhyme with illustrations as an example of what can be done. I am almost embarrassed to use the word ‘we’, as 90% of the skill lies with Richard.
However, this will be my final fling for fame, as 2010/11 is definitely my last year on the bulletin, as I think six years straight, [excluding the 3 months with Ian Downing taking my place], is quite enough. I am looking forward to attending Rotary without having that job to do. [And I bet a lot of you are too!]
Foxy.
The world-wide Rotary battle to eradicate Polio is not over yet
The incidence of polio continues to decline as immunization drives intensify in endemic countries and those where the poliovirus has been imported. As of 15th June, Nigeria reported only 3 polio cases compared with 312 for the same period last year, and India reported 21 compared with 67. Total cases so far this year amount to 349 worldwide!
From the Church News [identity of the church advised, but withheld]
‘Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.’
From the history of Rotary – Paul Harris’s office
The “trophy” 0ffice of Paul Harris is located on the 16th floor of RI World Headquarters. Furnishings, photos and memorabilia are arranged almost exactly as they were in the founder’s original office. His desk, with inlaid wood of different kinds, was a gift from Australian Rotarians. You can also see a chessboard made of butterfly wings, a Rotary flag flown by Admiral Byrd over he south Pole, medals of honour from various nations, and Paul’s favourite quotation: “He who has a thousand friends has not a friend to spare”.
There appears to be a bit of ambiguity here [This little gem is reprinted from the UK Radio Times]
