Guest Speaker
Sally Ford who is Jan and Geoff Chandler's daughter spoke to us about living with food allergies. The number of children with allergies to a vast number of substances has increased enormously over the last two or three decades. Common things causing reactions are peanuts, tree nuts, eggs and dairy products and seafood. The reaction can vary from a mild rash to anaphylaxsis that if not treated immediately and appropriately can cause death.  Her daughter, Matilda now 10 years old is a normal child except for sensitivity to many things. Peanuts, tree nuts and dust mites are the worst. Since diagnosis at twelve months old, satay chicken, vanilla ice creams are and chocolate are just some of the things that have resulted in various reactions. As Matilda has experienced four episodes this last year the family has established a procedure for treatment at home and at school, which is known and understood by those who are responsible for her care and welfare. It is unlikely that she will grow out of all the allergies but reactions may lessen with age. Regular medical visits are vital as is vigilance with the things that may trigger a reaction. Desensitization trials may be used in the future. The whole family certainly has faced this challenge to provide this little girl with a life as free from difficulty as possible with common sense and practical love and care.
