Notes and reminders:
President Margaret attended a Rotary Health Aboriginal Scholarship function and reported that funding is available for students of indigenous descent who are in their second year of health related studies. All students are mature age, some with teenage families. They found that their study motivated their children. At present RI Geelong is the only club in our district sponsoring a student and it was suggested that we, with other clubs on the Bellarine might become involved. The amount of $2500, which is matched by the Government, is the cost. Margaret suggested that as the student sponsored by Geelong lives in Ocean Grove she might attend a meeting or two with us if her time permits.
- Secy Vic: District Changeover dinner is on 1/7/2012 at Capri in North Geelong.
* * Annual reports are needed now.
Member’s cards are available from the reception desk at the Bowling Club.
Bowel Scan kits are available for $10.00
- International: Geoff Brentnall still has the RAWCS stickers- they are $5.00.
Shelter boxes have gone to Italy for earthquake relief, to Peru for floods and mudslide relief and to the Congo where there has been an industrial explosion.
- John Paton -Winter Market on Sunday 3rd June, there were 55 stalls and 860 people through the door. With the money collected at the door there will be enough to fund two more Shelter Boxes. Well done everyone! John thanked all those who helped and apologized for taking up another Sunday.
- Ann Geerings is organizing an outing to Inverleigh on 13th July. Morning tea will be at the Red Door Café and Lunch will be at The Inverleigh Hotel. Bring your walking shoes, as the entertainment will be a walk around the town and viewing the lovely countryside. The departure time is 9.30 a.m. Please let Ann Magee know if you are attending.
- New Generations: Anne Hodgkinson reported that a student who has previously attended RYPEN would probably attend the Youth Science Forum in Canberra. Anne has commenced discussions with St Ignatius and Bellarine Secondary College about Youth programs and perhaps forming a partnership with Youth Exchange in mind.
- Mega Swim. Training is going well even though some members of the team seem to have a problem fitting it into their diaries. Kerrie Ricchini is also a member of the team, my apologies for omitting her name.
Footy Tipping. Bill Walton is leading the competition.
- Please remember to avail yourselves of the tea and coffee provided during the evening, preferably before the guest speaker commences.
Guest Speaker:
Warren Norton – Rotarians for Landmine Action.
Warren spoke about two distinct groups in Rotary – Fellowship and Action groups. The Landmine action group falls within the latter. Action groups involve doing something in our world to improve the lot of other people. There are many areas which benefit from action group activities, including blindness, hearing impairment, water projects, blood donation to name only a few.
There are 45-50 million landmines in at least 70 different countries, and at least 30,000 people die or are maimed every year. The consequences of live landmines are terrible because they are mostly placed in the areas where people travel, work or live, especially in the country around towns or villages. As most mined areas are not mapped people cannot work their land or rely on easily available water sources and poverty is the result. There is also great psychological trauma to families, as they do not feel safe to move around their communities for fear of death or injury. The Walk in Safety Program commenced through Geelong East and provides funding and support for de-mining. By removing mines, lives and limbs are saved, safe access to water and food growing areas is provided, peace is promoted and communities are more likely to stay together. But, de-mining is time consuming, expensive and very dangerous. The Group has a 700km stretch of land in Cambodia where they are proving funds to train local community members to de-mine. These people are paid to clear their own land.
It is important that Rotarians are made aware of de-mining and to encourage involvement by club members. Unfortunately activity is suspended but Warren is hopeful that activity will recommence in the near future. Our club is involved at district level.
