Notes and reminders:
- Mega Swim. Training is going well, encouraging onlookers are always welcome. The ANZ Bank has donated $500.00 again this year. There are 17 other sponsors and of course more would be welcome. Volunteers are still needed for the fascinating and challenging duties for the early a.m. shift.
- Geoff Chandler reminded members about the Shine On Awards. He would be pleased to receive nominations any time.
- Membership: There is to be an information night on 28/8/2012 so please bring along people who may be interested for drinks and nibbles.
- Market: The erection of a fence is causing concern, especially to stall holders. Volunteers are called for to help them.
- Social Committee. Marion Walton and her group are organizing a night at Ten Pin Bowling at Belmont, followed by diner at the Grovedale Hotel on Sunday 19/8/2012 at 5.00p.m. Those interested were asked to sign the form being circulated so she can make a booking. Cost for 20 people will be $15 including shoes for two games. Partners and friends welcome. Will try to car pool.
- Phil Edwards reported that he had had a message from the Ambulance officers that the upgraded cardiac monitor we helped purchase has had very good use in four instances where Emergency Department was by-passed as direct admission was possible to the Cardiac Unit, thus resulting in faster treatment and less trauma for the patient.
- Pride in Workmanship Award. Please consider likely recipients for this award.

****** Please remember to avail yourselves of the tea and coffee provided during the evening, preferably before the guest speaker commences*****

Guest Speaker – Neville Barwick Topic: East Timor.
Neville is an architect and was concerned with the Highland region of New Guinea. He was then involved with some construction work at Tullamarine and in Darwin after cyclone Tracy. He then changed direction to become Assistant Director General of Education. He is also an Honorary Member of RI Melbourne, and whilst a full member he formed a team to run the RI Melbourne Congress in 1992. There were 21,800 people registered and $92 million dollars was injected into our economy. (A note to our organizing committee for next years' conference, perhaps we should only aim for half those numbers as accommodation may be a limiting factor!)
As this club is interested in ramping up our International Service, Neville stressed the need to explore joint venture prospects and to win sponsors to enable these very worthwhile and often vital projects to succeed. He stressed the importance of giving due recognition to partners and sponsors. He also encouraged Rotary Clubs who generally initiated the project to withdraw as it developed and to work with those already in the field using their ideas and resources to proceed. Neville advised us to consider broadening the scope of International Service projects not letting limited resources or bureaucracy overcome initiative.
For sometime Neville has been aware of the debt owed to the people of East Timor for their service to Australian servicemen during WW2. He also saw the terrible results of the invasion Indonesian forces and subsequent devastation wrecked by the troops as they withdrew from East Timor in 2000. He was involved in facilitating the development of infrastructure programs, which have helped to rectify and rebuild many areas. His latest project has been the building of an Embassy for East Timor in Canberra as a gift to the developing nation. It was handed over in 2009.
