Introducing our New President - John Paton
"I was born in 1950 & grew up at Tooma in the picturesque Upper Murray region in sight of the Snowy Mountains. I spent the last 5 years of my school life as a boarder at The Geelong College and then attended Melbourne University & graduated as a Veterinarian in 1972.
Veterinary practice really started with a very intensive and enjoyable first year in mixed practice in Alexandra then Ballarat, followed by a stint in equine & small animal practice in Ascot Vale. This introduced me to Sunbury where I literally built a practice from the ground up, found polocrosse and met & married Pippa (from Ballarat!). Active involvement in Sunbury Show Society, Sunbury Polocrosse Club & Victorian Polocrosse Association
Back to the North-East & Corryong for 10 years of classic mixed practice – cow caesareans at midnight in paddocks covered with frost, thousands of cow pregnancy tests, cats in clothes dryers etc; fantastic country life, a wonderful patient wife, 3 children Tom, Angela & Cam, a farm and community involvement -got involved in Corryong Tourism and was co-founder then co-ordinator of the Corryong “The Man from Snowy River High Country Festival’ for 6 years.
Albury-Wodonga followed for the next 16 years – basically companion animal practice with a heavy load of practice management and an emphasis on customer service – resulted in local and national veterinary customer service awards for the practice. I joined Rotary Club of Albury West in 2006. From 2000 to 2008 we renewed our association with Geelong when our 3 children became boarders at Geelong College.
In 2008 we moved to a quieter, less stressful life at Ocean Grove (with a view to live for) doing locums with a touch of management advice in Geelong region, regional Victoria, Tasmania & Adelaide, often made into working holidays with Pippa.
I joined the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove in that year and am proud to have initiated the concept of Indoor Winter Markets to supplement our traditional summer series as well as serving as Sergeant for 2 years and Chair of the Membership Committee.
Veterinary practice & a happy family have been interspersed with a variety of passions. First it was rowing at Uni, then horses & polocrosse whilst at Sunbury. At Corryong it was farming & organising festivals. Travelling, eating, wines and skiing have been their forever and all occasionally get me into trouble. A number of years ago, I was looking for a new way to get fit and so I started a new passion – cycling!
If you cycle a lot, sooner or later, you will have a fall & in late 2013, I did -fracturing 10 ribs and rupturing the shoulder AC joint but now 6 months later, cycling is back on the list of sports, along with golf, swimming & kayaking.
I am a slow learner - after my mother died of metastatic cancer probably of bowel origin, I did have a colonoscopy but I left it 14 years to the next one, and by the skin of my teeth I’m still here. A third of my large bowel was removed but otherwise all is ‘normal’. I am now a passionate advocate for bowel screening programs.
One final passion is Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign. In 1956 my father contracted polio permanently paralysing his left leg. He was one of many adults who contracted polio around that time because polio vaccinations were being given to all children but adults were presumed to be safe. Soon after, vaccination was expanded to include everyone, in our country at least. Now I’m proud to be involved through Rotary in bringing this protection to all children worldwide. In 2010, 2011 & 2012 I was involved in “District 9790 Ride to Conference for Polio Plus”. Over those 3 years we raised approximately $60,000 for the Polio Plus campaign.
And now - still doing locums part of the year and hoping in 2015 to organise another Polio Plus Bike Ride fundraiser, this time around the Bellarine."
