3 on Me: Dick Clay
Dick was born in East Doncaster in 1945 where his parents ran an orchard. After suffering chilblains from the cold his father packed up the family and moved to Kyabram where he worked as a fruit inspector. Dick thrived on the easygoing lifestyle in Kyabram - footy, cricket, swimming & fishing in the channels and rivers, riding his bike around the district, and going to the movies on a Saturday night. As a teenager, to be accepted as part of the Kyabram "gang", you had to pass the Kyabram courage test i.e. you had to hide under the cattle grid while the train went over the top of you. A very scary feat, but if you did it, you were considered "in". Echuca & Moama were also regular haunts, especially for the Saturday night entertainment.
The Richmond Football Club signed him up in 1966 and he continued his association with them for the next 10 years, playing with such greats as Kevin Sheedy, Kevin Bartlett, & Royce Hart.
In those days you had to have a job as well, so he found a job with Tarax soft drinks, and was involved in many aspects of the business from product testing, to marketing, distribution & sales. The skills he learnt were invaluable as he moved into running his own businesses - firstly the Court Jester Hotel in Prahran, then the Royal Saxon Hotel in Richmond, followed by Toyworld and finally a Tattslotto agency in Collingwood/Fitzroy, before retiring to Ocean Grove.
He and Leone have 3 children, and 4 grandchildren. He has a restricted pilots license having taken lessons in solo flying in Cessna planes.
(Author's note - Dick's also pretty good on the bowling green after only just taking it up last year)
The Sailing Ships of the First Fleet - Cheryl Tinbury
Cheryl is an active and passionate member of the Fellowship of First Fleeters. The Fellowship is an organisation comprised of descendants of those who arrived in Sydney Cove with the First Fleet on 26 January 1788.
Her presentation was on the 11 ships that made up the First Fleet describing in some detail the lives of the passengers and the conditions they had to endure on the long journey from England to Australia, in virtually uncharted waters. The ships were: HMS Sirius, HMS Supply, Alexandra, Charlotte, Friendship, Lady Penryhn, Prince of Wales, Scarborough, Golden Grove, Fishburn and Borrowdale.
It really made you realise just how difficult it must have been, not only for the convicts but for the ship's crew, officers, marines and their families, coming to a new land, largely unknown and uninhabited by Western civilisation, with only the provisions that they had with them to begin their new life.
