3 on Me: Gordon King.
Gordon was raised in Moonie Ponds and being brought up in Essendon became a very keen supporter of the mighty Bombers.
He attended Essendon High School before studying Architecture at RMIT. He was awarded a Federal Cadetship, which enabled him to be paid whilst finishing his degree. After three years at RMIIT he transferred to Melbourne University where he completed the Bachelor of Architecture in 1967. A Diploma of Architecture followed in 1970, and after a move to Sydney Gordon graduated from Sydney University with a Diploma in Town and Country Planning in 1971.
Professionally he has been involved with the design of Reserve Banks in all state capital cities. He was then selected to work on the Commonwealth –State Law courts. This was an interesting time dealing with competing demands of State and Federal governments, and the egos of the judiciary.
In 1971 on return to Melbourne he spent some years designing airports all around Australia.
For the next 14 years he travelled widely around the world designing and constructing Australian Embassies and other accommodation. He has also been involved with security at the current Parliament House, a six level car park and the Ritz Carlton in Double Bay. In 1994 he started his own project management company and was responsible for major projects for NSW Clubs.
There were eight in all.
In 2011 he sold the project management consultancy and retired to Ocean Grove.
His interests are gardening, bush walking, travel, cycling, Rotary, lawn bowls and wine appreciation.
Gordon has four sons all married, and 6.5 grandchildren.
Last Friday, after 12 years together he and Marian ran away and got married!

Guest Speakers. Chris Patterson and Paul Short from the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club.
A cheque was presented to OGSLSC $932.00. This will be used to purchase helmets for the Nipper program.
There has been a long association between the two clubs (especially with Noel Emselle who has been a member for 60 years). The management structure is in the process of change with some responsibilities being devolved and spread down the line. The Surf Club commenced in 1948 and after a period of inactivity was resurrected in 1952, and is still going strong.
There are three main elements:
  • Sporting
  • Community involvement
  • Emergency Service.
There were 11,533 people rescued throughout Australia last year, 11 of these were in Ocean Grove. The main activity is preventative action, with 7,000 being carried out here. The total beach attendance was 138,000. This will continue to grow with the new housing developments in the district.
The next few years will see considerable upgrading and expansion of the current building, which is 20 years old. The new footprint will be considerably larger, multileveled with plenty of storage and rooms for teaching. There will substantial community facilities included and available for public hire. These new facilities will provide an income so hopefully the dependence on corporate sponsorship and donation will not be as acute.
