Life in Kazakhstan - Hon. Consul for Kazakhstan, Andrew Fernyhough
As well as being the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Victoria, Andrew is the founder of the Kazakhstan Society of Australia and President of the Kazakhstan Australia Chamber of Commerce. His wife is from Kazahkstan and it is through his extended family connections that he has taken on these roles.
Kazakhstan is the largest land locked country, and 9th largest country in the world. It has a population of around 70M people and is made up of 130 different ethnicities, cultures & religions.
Due to its rich mineral, oil & gas reserves it is an emerging country as they reinvest the money from the sale of these resources to improve life for the population. As yet a tourism industry is yet to be developed, but as the country emerges on the world scene it won't be long until tourism flourishes.
Temperatures can range from as low as -50oC and as high as 40oC, as it is a country made up of steppes and mountainous areas.
Andrew focussed his talk mainly on the agricultural revolution going on their and his involvement with bringing stud cattle from Australia to Kazakhstan to rebuild a sustainable and profitable cattle industry. The cattle are flown in by plane and are very well looked after.
From the slideshow Andrew showed, the country looks quite spectacular with a rich culture and people with pride in their country.
