3 on Me: Peter Cullen
Peter was born in Yorkshire, England in 1942.  He didn't get to meet his father until he was 5 years old, as he was in the RAF and assigned to Italy during the war. When he did come home, the family grew to include another 3 brothers and 3 sisters.  In these post war years, times were tough and providing for a family of 9 was no easy task, and food was not always readily available. Determined to make a better life for the family, they moved to Australia, Peter was 17 at the time and considered it a great adventure.
The family was billeted in Norlane before moving into their own home. Peter and his father found work at International Harvester. Peter later moved on to the Ford processing plant and was often sent overseas, to trouble shoot and learn new processes.
He married Annette in 1964 and they had a son and a daughter. 21 years ago he took a redundancy package from Ford and decided to start up his own landscaping business. Sadly Annette passed away from cancer a few years ago. Peter is actively involved in football, as he has always had a passion for sport, having played soccer, basketball, cricket, squash, football and badminton. He has 5 great grandchildren and is 72 years young!

Solemaid Community School (SCS) - Helen & Craig Salmon
SCS is of particular interest to OG Rotary Club as it is one of the main projects supported by the International Services Committee and is therefore very close to our heart. Helen & Craig were involved in the planning & set up of the school so it was wonderful to have them speak firsthand about its progress.
Helen & Craig both teach at the International School of Dhaka, and it was through their involvement with teachers from other schools in Bangladesh, that they were approached to help set up a school for the poorest children from the slum areas in Dhaka. Bangladesh has a population of over 165M and is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, literacy rates are approx. 55%, and only around 6% of school students continue on to tertiary education. Poverty is widespread, and families need to decide on a daily basis if they will send their child to school or send them out to earn money so that they can have food on the table.
After almost 3 years of planning, setting goals, and investigating the feasibility of starting a school for street kids, SCS finally opened in January last year, with 3 teachers and 104 students. The teachers went around to houses and met with the families to establish the neediest with the rest (around 350) on a waiting list. They then set about finding materials to furnish the school, painted it inside and out and set it up as a stimulating learning environment.
The school does not charge fees, and provides a healthy meal for each child every day (Dahl & Paratha). Our support goes towards providing these meals, and this means so much to the parents and families of these children. Each meal costs around 17 cents!
Helen & Craig act as consultants to the school and continue to involve the students at their International School with SCS to work side by side on special projects.
It has been great success and this year the intake is up to 144, with 2 new grade levels introduced.
