10th Aug - lunch at McGlashen's Winery, wine tasting & tour….
Lunch and wine tasting has been arranged at McGlashen's Winery for Sunday 10/8 at 12.30pm.
Russell the owner will give us a brief history on the area; enjoy a taste of their wines followed by a plattered lunch.
The Winery is in Swan Bay Rd. Wallington. To get there continue past Van Loon's Nursery and turn left at the next corner and travel about 500 metres and it is on the right. There are signs at the front gate.
Cost of the lunch is $20 per head and will be collected on the day.
John Calnin will be taking names on Tues 5/10 so if you are not at the meeting that night can you please email him.
Don't get concerned if the weather is poor, the area has a nice warm fire so it is very comfortable.
Members can bring guests. Put it in your diary now and let's hope, seeing this is the first social function for the year that it is well supported. If any member needs more info contact John.
Our Social calendar for the year will be launched at lunch
Fees are due for the new financial year - $200
Art show entries are now available, contact Coral if you know anyone who would be interested in receiving an entry form.
Richard Trigg won footy tipping this week, but… you guessed it, Geoff Chandler is still the overall leader.
3 on Me - Richard Grimmett
Richard was born in Albury in 1964 but moved around a lot during his childhood depending on where his father was assigned as a minister of the Uniting Church. He spent 6 years in Dimboola (and did most his secondary schooling there), 6 years in Colac (where he met Heather). He and Heather moved to Ayers Rock to work the Ayers Rock hotel. They have 3 lovely children all very well grounded and doing well. In 2004 he established Bellarine Memories with Philip Christian. They are a great partnership and the business is doing well.
Richard's passions are music (plays guitar, banjo, harmonica, ukulele, & didgeridoo), walking, surfing and community service (having been involved in Apex for 10 years, and Rotary for almost 10 years). 3 years ago he discovered he had Parkinson's disease and is managing it the best he can, while working hard to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's disease research (his father and brother also have PD). Next Saturday night at the OG Chicken Shop is a great night of live music from 5pm - 11pm to raise money for this important cause. It would be wonderful if we can support Richard through attending.
Ocean Grove Coastcare - Jacqui Scully & Margot Busch
OG Coastcare was established in 2010 as a result of some local young women coming together with the shared interest in conservation and local environment. Since then they have become an incorporated body and have the support of Barwon Coast and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
Their mission statement reads: "To protect and enhance the natural values of the Ocean Grove coastal environment through education, hands on projects and working with partnerships with land managers, key stakeholders and the community."
To date, they have held environmental film nights, revegetation days, educational programs with the Nippers, schools and at local markets, involvement with Clean Up Australia Day, native and indigenous plant giveaways and continue to have regular weed pulls to rid the area of weeds such as polygala and sea spurge.
One of their big projects is to 'make Ocean Grove plastic bag free'. Through community education, discussions with retailers, pressure on each level of government their aim is to change community behavior with the overall aim of reducing our reliance on plastic bags.
Plastic bags do degrade, but they are not biodegradable which means that even in their degraded state they release toxins when ingested by fish and birds, which can eventually move up the food chain to humans.
In Australia a staggering10M plastic bags are used per day and unfortunately 30-50M end up as litter on our beaches, streets and parks.
The alternative they hope to be able to offer is through the sale of environmentally friendly jute bags, which are sturdy and great for taking to the supermarket.
If you would like to know more or get involved, you can email oceangrovecoastcare@gmail.com and membership is only $2 per year.
The next weed pull working bees are - 17th Aug 10am-noon(OG - 7W), 21st Sep 10am-noon (OG - 7W), and 12th Oct 10am-noon (Point Lonsdale - 4W).
24th July there is a film night 'Chasing Ice' at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop starting a 7pm (gold coin donation).
If you want to find out more about the impact of plastic bags on the environment, Margot recommends you watch the short clip from a Catalyst program on the ABC: http://abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/3583576.htm it is well worth watching (and quite disturbing).
