Guest Speaker: Anne Hillis. "Food Myths and       Misconceptions."
Anne is a Nutritionist, Dietician and Author. She was educated at Morongo and the Gordon Tech and worked at the Alfred Hospital and at Heinz as a food consultant.
Anne stressed that a dietitian is not a glorified cook but a scientist following a 5year course with a Masters in Dietetics, the clinical application of nutrition. She then talked briefly about the passage and digestion of food through the alimentary tract. The sole purpose of this is to keep the brain and vital organs alive as well as detoxification of many components of what is consumed. Anne then arranged her talk using the letters of FOOD to stress the important points.
F included fat and the misconceptions surrounding cholesterol, fibre and fish.
O included colour, (orange) oxygen and antioxidants, the need for iron to transport oxygen around the body, on the move (exercise). Old (aging) of our bodies and of foods were mentioned, as was the need for a varied and adequate consumption of vegetables, legumes and water.
O highlighted occasional foods. Those consumed once a week only. The problem of obesity and its complex treatment was also indicated.
D included drivel found in many women's magazines, drinks and the importance of water not sports drinks which are high in sugar was emphasized. The need for adequate amounts of Vitamin D, which is fat soluble and stored in the liver and necessary for the absorption of calcium was highlighted.
Sugar is not needed in most foods and if salt must be added iodized salt should be used.
Anne concluded the presentation by stating that foods rely on each other and therefore a varied diet is essential. She suggested that 30 minutes of exercise and 30 different foods daily was the best plan for health.
Everything in moderation is the best plan.
