Guest Speaker: Peter Kelly. " Male Health and Wellbeing – A Snapshot."
Peter works with Barwon Health in Health Promotion. He is not medically qualified. He also works for prevention of violence against women, and is the President of Male Health Victoria, a group that has been functioning for three years trying to impact on resources and social aspects of men's health. His role concentrates on social, psychological, spiritual and cultural health promotion using a holistic approach to try to emulate the wide understanding about health that women have achieved.
A gender approach to male health is needed, as is an understanding how social contexts impact on health. He stated that 68% of adult males are overweight, 25% between 5 -17 years. 43% of males visit a GP in a year with 16% not using medical services in a year. Half of all males experience violence at least once. Most causes of premature death are preventable if the differences between groups and lifestyles are appreciated and treated in a sensitive, experienced and knowledgeable way. He believes the concepts of masculinity are vital and probably need changing so males can accept the need to seek help and appropriate care to make positive change. Peter believes men are usually effective if they decide to change.
