An outstanding meal outside the normal will be served for your delectation about 7pm. There will be four courses! (At a cost of around $25.00.) A Bush Poet will precede Father Christmas…. That is if he is not bogged in America. All facilities for the ladies will be available…not sure about the men. It is recommended that you are not late at the car park, as we may never see you again.
It should be a great fun night.
Art Show: A more detailed report will be available when the final figures are available.
Guest Speaker: Barton van Laars from Bike Safe.
The movement started in Geelong 5 years ago. The small population of cyclists in Geelong noted that the infrastructure in the City of Greater Geelong was very poor with almost no consideration being given to their needs for basic safety. It was also noted that 50% of fatalities were in this area. Barton showed many of the hazards that had to be overcome. He decided to do try to rectify the situation in a positive manner. Assistance of the media, police luminaries of the district, bus companies, the council with roadside signage and education starting in primary schools. Migrant children were also targeted, as bikes are often the only means of transport.
By working with various community facilities 8 specified bike paths have been built to eradicate particularly dangerous areas. Suitable maintenance is also provided. Funding comes from various sources including Government. The group has developed strategic plans and priorities that have assisted in their success.
Barton recommended that every cyclist should have insurance. He also emphasized that the organization 'Bike Safe' is only small but it does have the ear of government.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays. Also the Club has to pay for members who have apologized and not turned up!
Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.
A Reminder… I would be very grateful if a hard copy of reports could be given to me at the meeting…. It would make my task easier!
