Guest Speaker. Gill Morgan. "INDIA"
Gill travelled with a friend mostly by road to places they had not seen on a previous trip. Two Indian friends also travelled with them and their knowledge and skills enhanced their experience enormously. Hindus comprise the majority of Indians with the rest made up of Sikhs, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians. They all live in relative harmony with each other and despite the chaotic life in the cities they appear a very calm people with very little anger even on the roads. Traffic is chaotic. Lane markings are virtually ignored and a four-lane roadway can comprise half a dozen cars across the width as well as auto rickshaws, trucks, motorbikes and camels, all going in the opposite direction. Horns are constantly sounding and are known as road music, while traffic lights are only a suggestion of what should happen. The only thing that stops the traffic is cattle and the occasional elephant. Gill's tour commenced in Mumbai, then to Udaipur and then off the beaten track to an almost empty hotel with absolutely nothing to do and basic comforts. A staff member took them to a village where they learned more about village life and the very rudimentary facilities available especially in the school. Gill was moved to see workers distributing polio drops to children and believes this unplanned witnessing of Polio Plus in action, was a highlight of the trip.
They travelled to Jaipur and Amritsar in the Punjab where they saw the distribution of food to 100s of people every day, 24 hours a day. This was done by Sikhs as part of their belief in service to their fellow man. The colourful beating of the retreat ceremony at the Indian/Pakistani border was also viewed. Prior to returning to Delhi, Chandigarh and Simla were next on the agenda. Many features of this area reflect the occupation of the area by the British and the Government during the heat of summer. Whilst in Simla which is at 8000ft. six inches of snow fell. The train ride back to the plains was also a highlight.
Security was very tight everywhere. All parts of vehicles are checked before entering the gates of hotels and people going into hotels have to pass through a security screen and bags have to pass through x-ray machines.
Light entertainment was provided by a visit to Bollywood – brilliant colours, singing, dancing, noise, rubbish stories and everyone loves it including Gillian!
I suspect this will not be the last trip to India for Gill – it is indeed an intriguing country where the unexpected quickly becomes the norm.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!
Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You
A Reminder… I would be very grateful if a hard copy of reports could be given to me at the meeting… My task would be made easier!
