Guest Speaker: Adam Ford, "My Life in Ruins."
Adam is the host of the popular Television program "Who has been sleeping in my house?"
Apart from digging many holes in excavation sites Adam is fascinated with the stories and events that occurred at these sites and how they contribute to the past and present Cultural Heritage. He became interested in Archaeology from the age of 7years when he found a 500year old bone in a dig. Apart from digging up the backyard he gained a degree and pursued wide practical experience particularly in Jordan and Syria.
Excavation is done very slowly and carefully as once a site is excavated it is destroyed. Analysis is done on soil, rocks, animals, flora and artifacts.
Much of the study of Human past is done through the study of rubbish (Human Waste dumps) and research into Historical data as well as physical and personal artifacts. He would rather pursue stories associated with finds, as on the surface the past has curio value and provides a context about current life. Deeper research exposes the combined experience of billions of people and their relevance to current life. This shared cultural history and identity is our common wealth.
Conflict destroys cultural heritage. Artifacts are sold to fund arms and war and once lost usually cannot be regained, therefore stories about cultural heritage are vital especially if these can be validated and correctly preserved. Adam prefers stories about ordinary people in the past that made our civilization and heritage what it is today and in the future.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays. Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up! Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.
A Reminder… I would be very grateful if a hard copy of reports could be given to me at the meeting… My task would be made easier!
