Guest Speaker: Mark Edmunds. "Embracing Change."
Mark told of some highlights from his life of continuing change, arguing that you can choose change or remain the same and miss out.
He was born in Birmingham. His father was an engineer and in 1964 the family moved to Bahar Province in India to work at the coal mine. He went to an English language school in India where he and his brother were called the 'white monkeys'. This was not an insult, just a reflection that they were different. The family had servants and a security guard, because corruption was rife in the coalmines and there was always some potential danger. Behar was a very poor state and the coal mine was very labour intensive, providing work for the men. Women worked at the cement works.
The administrative language was English. However, his brother learnt Sanskrit and both boys could read and write Hindi. Indian Nationalist fervor was beginning at this time and there were occasional strikes and agitation for better pay and conditions. As conditions worsened in the late 1960s he and his brother were sent back to a boarding school in England returning to India for holidays. The hostilities between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were increasing so the family moved back to Birmingham, where he found racism more obvious than in India.
In 1972, the family immigrated to Sydney where Mark completed his education. He had been to 8 or 9 different schools by the time he was 13. This gave him the ability to fit into groups more easily. While at school, he became involved with INTERACT, a Rotary initiative. He went to Sydney University where he experienced Tony Abbott as the president of the students union.
He has worked at a series of retail stores in their buying offices. In Geelong he worked for Keith and Barry Fagg. After moving to Ocean Grove, Mark has been involved in a number of local community organizations.
His lesson from all of this is that change is going to happen, so embrace it as an opportunity.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!
Phone number is 0457315900. Thank You.
A Reminder… I would be very grateful if a hard copy of reports could be given to me at the meeting… My task would be made easier!
Alan Joyce (previous member) lost his son in tragic circumstances recently. Our thoughts are with him and his family.
Thanks to Ann Hodgkinson for her note taking again.
