- Guest Speaker: Jan Johannessen and Sue Woolnough. "Bali Smiles."
Jan had a chance meeting with a child in Bali and realized that beneath the sophisticated layer of tourism in Bali many of the people live in abject poverty. (The child is now in Year 12.) She decided see if she could ease this for some people. She commenced with sponsoring 18 children for food and education in a remote village of Munti Gunung that is very poor and barren. Through her work some small industries have begun and some women are able to have some small luxuries. An eye clinic similar in set up to the Fred Hollows model has commenced, as has a small health clinic where road trauma and some diseases can be treated. She has used her own money to finance this as well as the position of a part-time doctor. The patients pay a small amount for care. Some equipment has been given by Sacred Heart College. Funds are raised in Australia by various means including donations, street stalls and the sale of Sue's artwork. The future plans include a rice program, pigs for food as well as chickens. Jan hopes to improve sanitation facilities where water is available.
It is amazing the difference one person can make through belief and no doubt hard work in the lives of people less fortunate than us.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up! Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.
