Guest Speaker: Anthony Mangelsdorf
"Environmental Sustainability" – Educator of the Year.
Anthony was a student at Federation and La Trobe Universities gaining a degree in Architecture. He is currently involved with teaching young people in the Geelong area about Nature, particularly in the High Plains of Victoria. His Father who sent him on a Bushwalking camp during school holidays fostered his love of nature. He also learned at this time how important working in a group was. Anthony outlined some of the many lessons and opportunities there are in the high country and Alpine regions. This is especially important as much of the habitat is being affected by climate change, and human use of the country. Members present were also shown how to build an igloo, an area he is involved in with 3-year-old children at present. His teaching of igloo making also emphasizes the importance working as a team, the end use of objects, the benefits of insulation and solar heating as well as drama and adventure. By thinking about place names in the area he encourages students to reflect on the early history and development of this fragile place.
He showed a video of his experiences in the bush and briefly outlined some of the beauty found there. It was obvious how much he loves his job and the pleasure he gains from sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with his audience and students.

Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!
