Guest Speakers: Kathie Mahar and Len Monti.
Kathie and Len outlined a proposal for consideration by the Club involving Timor L'Este
All of Victoria has been allocated an area in Timor L'Este to provide support as the country develops. The area allocated to our area is Viqueque, a town of 7,000 people about 50 km from Dili. The area is very mountainous with not much land for agriculture. The town has barely recovered from the destruction of infrastructure and services by the Indonesians after declaration of autonomy of Timor L'Este in 2002. Friendship Health Group has been formed with the main area of interest being capacity and skill building in the area of Health. Area Friendship Health is an incorporated association bringing together health professionals interested in Health. The City of Greater Geelong formed a formal partnership with Viqueque in 2004 and St John of God Health Care became involved in 2014.
The main purposes of the Friendship Group are to:
·      Increase capacity through education and training in health skills and knowledge.
·      Provision of equipment suitable to the level of knowledge and environment.
·      Development of beneficial relationships between health professionals.
·      Improvement of professional and physical environments that support good health practices.
An assessment of the water supply for a health outpost was made in September 2015. It was found that the clinic has no water supply making it impossible for workers to wash their hands, clean equipment and have a clean, secure water supply for their own use. Therefore the provision of consistent, clean water to the clinic was important. This can be done through restoration of the well, pump, tank and tank stand, and piped water supply to the clinic. It was also realized that training of a local villager in the reconstruction and maintenance of the water supply was vital.
Kathie and Len outlined the scope of the project, which they suggested the Club could become involved in. This would include: capacity building in the village, a timeline of planning and execution of the work, logistics and health care for the volunteers, and knowledge of cultural differences and environmental challenges.
The budget for this proposal would be $12,000 - $14,000. An interesting project which may provide 'hands on' involvement and certainly many challenges.

Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
