- Sydney Coad is excited and a little nervous as she prepares to leave for Japan on Saturday. She has been in touch with her host family who live in the central Honshu region that is about an hours flight north from Tokyo. She thanked the Club for giving her this opportunity and will keep in touch.
Treasurer: Noel Emselle reported that the books had been brought up to date as of 31/12/15.
International: Richard Clay reported that the quarterly payment had been sent to Solmaid School in Bangladesh. We have been invited to visit the school whenever possible.
Shelter Box No: 14280 has been purchased and is awaiting deployment.
There will be a Chinese cultural night on 23/2/15. Please see Email from Tony Haines. Members are asked to wear something RED. Come prepared to celebrate with some surprises. It is Chinese New Year!
Market: Graeme Chamberlain thanked everyone for his or her help at the last market. The next market will be on 6/2/16. Graeme and Sandy are learning the market management foibles! The Gold coin donation earned almost $1600.00 for the fire brigade. In future sites will have to be prepaid in an effort to reduce no shows.
Social: The next social event will be combined with the Chinese New Year night on 23/2/2016.
Community: The organizer of the Primary School Garden will speak to the club in February.
Gerry Spencer reported that the Pt. Lonsdale Community Bowls competition would begin again on 1/2/2016 and would run for 4 Monday evenings. All interested in playing should contact him as soon as possible.
Richard Grimmett reported that the 21st Anniversary Ball to commemorate the Ocean Grove Cup would be held on 5th March. See Richard for more information.
Fundraising: The Car Raffle tickets are selling well. 126 books were sold at the Caravan Parks. A selling night will be held at the Pt. Lonsdale Park on Thursday 14/1/2016. Geoff Ford is looking for sellers at the Big 4 Park.
Rod Birrell has developed a machine as a fund raising idea. He asked for volunteers to take it out and put it back each day for a week, and chain it to a site in the main street. Also it possibly should be walked up and down. (Is this machine some sort of a robotic dog? Do we need to feed and water it?)
Peter Hawthorne informed members that Red Cross calling would be on March 1st. - "Ride the Bellarine" is being held on 3/2/16. Volunteers are needed to help.
Art Show: Please let Alison George know in writing if you have a nomination for some of the proceeds from the Art Show.
Youth: Geoff Chandler reported on a recent project where a speech pathologist had asked for assistance for a grade 6 student at Wallington Primary School, who would benefit from having a dedicated computer and program when he starts high school next year. The club donated its old computer to Nate and Rod Bush has set it up for him. The student has significant disabilities and this should help him with his schoolwork.
Guest Speakers: Max Lee and peter Rodon. "Aquabox".
They presented a video showing the impact of natural disasters on water supply and water borne diseases, and the particular effect on children. The first requirement after a disaster is to establish a reliable safe water supply.
They demonstrated the system. Local water is first strained through muslin and two purification tablets are added. The water is then filtered. After two hours clean water, to WHO standards is available. This rapid response device is deployed in liaison with local Rotarians, who organize notification of the need and the use on the ground very quickly. The device is usually in situ before larger solutions can arrive. All equipment is sourced from Australia at wholesale prices.
The project was founded when a member saw the operation in England. To be sure of quality standards all equipment is commercially sourced and it meets AUSAID requirements. Each box takes 30 litres of water and can be used multiple times with supplied packets of tablets and filters. Extra items supplied in the boxes include, Blankets, mosquito nets, rope, soap, dinner set, billy, torch, duct tape, knife, cutlery can opener, notebook, hammer, trenching tool, saw, nails and a bag to hold these items when the box is in use. The current strategy is to store the boxes in areas where they be needed.
An example of the effectiveness of the boxes was described where a number were sent to Cambodia. Village inhabitants were suffering from cholera, malaria and parasites. The sick were taken to hospital. After three months of using the boxes, there were no further illnesses in the village.
A family box costs $480, which includes freight and all materials. 90% of funding comes from Rotary Clubs and some supplementary donations. There are three Aquabox clubs in the world, England, Canada and Australia. The Australian club focuses on SE Asia and the Pacific Islands.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays. Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up! Phone number is: 0457 315 900
Many thanks to Ann Hodgkinson for taking the notes of last weeks meeting
