Guest Speakers: The Staff of the Boorai Centre.
Many Rotarians, seven partners and three visitor (prospective members) attended an in depth information session and comprehensive tour around the $10,000,000 center. It is large and appears to be well designed to accommodate the needs of those who will use this vibrant, high quality education, care and support service. The Philosophy of the center is "to provide a meeting place where relationships are built and maintained to achieve effective open communication and meaningful sustainable partnerships for all children and families." This involves four aspects: -
Identity: where empathy, integrity and creativity are considered.
Communication: where respect, tolerance and compassion are encouraged.
Wellbeing: where resilience, confidence and independence are fostered.
Learning: where integration, innovation and exploration are practiced.
The services currently provided at the center include:
·      Long Day Care (includes 4 year old integrated program)
·      Sessional Kindergarten Program
·      Occasional Care
·      School Holiday Program
·      Maternal and Child Health Service
·      Toy Library
·      Child Immunization Service (provided by Barwon Health)
·      Playgroups
·      Parent's Room
·      Family Services Allied Health Services
·      A range of health and wellbeing community activities.
The Boorai Center is owned by the Geelong community and managed by the City of Greater Geelong's Family Services Department. The Center Management makes decisions relating to the general administration and policies and procedures are developed in consultation with families, staff and other stakeholders.
There is 50 full time equivalent staff members employed. All the teachers have completed a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) or equivalent. Maternal and Child Health Nurses working at the center have qualifications in general nursing, midwifery and additional post graduate qualifications in maternal and child health nursing. The Child and Family Support Officers have qualifications and experience in the care and development of preschool children.
The Center has established a Parents Committee that will be involved in social events, fundraising and provision of feedback to management.
Fees are charged according to set schedules.
The Boorai Center is a most impressive facility and will no doubt be a most valuable asset to the community.
