The large group dived into two and accompanied by proud and knowledgeable staff members from the library we were shown around this wonderful new facility. The building was designed for the whole city to enjoy and use its many 'state of the art' facilities including the heritage archives.
Lobbying for a new library commenced in 2001 and after two feasibility studies the Geelong Cultural Masterplan was developed and endorsed in 2007. Funding for the venture from the Federal Government, State Government and the City of Greater Geelong was eventually approved in September 2011. Tenders for Architectural Design Services were advertised in November 2011. In April 2012 the contract was awarded to ARM Architecture. After relocation and demolition of the old premises construction commenced in November 2013. The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre were opened in November 2015.
There are five public areas under the iconic domed roof and three further areas housing building services and administration. The public areas consist of 1.The Ground Floor & Mezzanine Gathering Place, Ki-kirri-ngitj (We talk together); 2.Reading Nest and Cave, Ngawirring ngiyt (Learn Together) and Kanyul karrung, (Youth space); 3.Inspiration Space, Nyaal, (Open Your Eyes); 4. The Vault, Kim barne thaliyu, (Here Yesterday); 5.The High Ground, Wurdi Youang, (Big hill in the middle of the plains). An elder of the Waddawurrung people was responsible for the titles for each level.
The facility incorporates 6.000 square meters of space which houses a diverse collection of print, multimedia and heritage items, technology, exhibition space, meeting rooms of various sizes, activities and technology for children and young adults as well as adults and services for physically impaired users.
This most impressive center was delivered to the City at a cost of $45.5 million and should meet the expectations of 21st Century users, providing contemporary, innovative information services for the people young and old as well a meeting place for all to use and enjoy.
Following the visit dinner was enjoyed at La Porcetta. Many thanks were extended to Martin Geerings for organizing the very interesting and enjoyable 'different' meeting.
