Guest Speakers: Dr Carol Naylor and Rosemary Thompson. 'Uniting Care Education'
Dr Carol Naylor & Rosemary Thompson |
The main role of our speakers and the 4or 5 other members (all volunteers) are to interview families who need assistance with the education of the children who are mostly year 10 – 12. This year $140,000 has been given to over 400 families. Demands on the organization are growing especially with many more refugees, some of whom are 'orphans' as their families are often absent or missing altogether. Needy families are often referred through word of mouth and especially Secondary Schools who have formed an association with Uniting Care. Assistance is often in the form of one full school uniform and sturdy shoes, books and where necessary electronic items, attendance at camps and sometimes work clothes. Many of the parents are pensioners and there is an increasing number of children living 'independently' and managing without parental support. There are also an increasing number of children being cared for by grandparents.
The major challenge is finding enough time as most families are interviewed twice and time is needed to liaise with schools, equipment suppliers and other supporting organizations. There are many success stories with many of the children finishing year 12 and moving into trades, professions or university.
The $2,000 given by the Club as part of the profit from the Art Show was used to send 8 students living in a shared house to a camp.
Our speakers showed their obvious passion for their work and our donation has been greatly appreciated.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
