Guest Speaker: Lesley Sheddon. ROMAC
Lesley came from Bendigo, where she had attempted to join Rotary but they were not taking female members at the time. On moving to Torquay she joined that club and became interested in ROMAC. She is now District Chair of ROMAC.
ROMAC (Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children), started in Bendigo in 1988 and focuses on countries in the Oceania region. Rotarians run it and all donated funds go towards services, which involve the provision of specialist medical aid for children. It may be life saving and/or dignity restoring. The treatment needed is not available in their home countries. Over 400 children have been treated.
Children are brought to Victoria for world-class paediatric medical care, either at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) or Monash Medical Centre. Some treatment is provided privately. Surgeons give their time pro bono, but some hospitals may charge 'cost recovery' which runs into tens of thousands of dollars for each case. Whilst in Australia patients and their families are hosted by Rotary members. Cancer patients are not usually included because of the high cost and length of stay involved. Experience gained through care of these children is very valuable for the medical teams involved. (See Facebook and web sites for further information.)
Rotary members can help by being a host for a day or weekend, or acting as a volunteer driver or visitor. They can also take a child and their family on an outing. Donations from Clubs are also welcomed.
Lesley was presented with a cheque for $1000 as a donation to ROMAC.
