Guest Speaker: Sami Gravener
Sami spent her exchange year in the Haute-Savoie Department in the Rhone Valley. Her three host families lived in Annecy, a small town close to the Swiss border.
The school she attended had about 2000 students in years 10 to 12. Her school day commenced at 8am and finished at 5.30pm. The program was very diverse and involved hard work. She remembers particularly the cafeteria and the friendly relations with the teachers. Breaks for smoking were something new! Other memorable things were the wonderful food, the friendly people and their pursuit of their activities depending on the season. Her three host families were very welcoming, very keen on travelling and life in the outdoors including bike riding, swimming, skiing and hiking. Christmas was celebrated on Christmas Eve and involved enjoyment of the food and the company present rather than gift giving.
The Rotary Club was Annecy-Tournette but Sami and the three other exchange students had little involvement with the Club. There was more contact with the local Rotaract Club where volunteering in local projects, working on the Christmas stall and food collection for the homeless. Sami was fortunate to be able to travel to many European Countries. She has had a wonderful year and expressed her thanks to Ocean Grove Rotary for facilitating her trip.
A reminder to members about he the 'Walk across the UK' Phil Edwards and a mate are undertaking to raise money to assist soldiers who are currently suffering the effects of military service.
