Guest Speakers: Deb Singleton, Science Co-ordinator at Christian College and James Hodder past student. "Association and projects in Viqueque, Timor L'Este."
The Chairman of the Board of Christian College met the Consul General of the new nation of East Timor in 2003. He encouraged the School to become involved in the development of the new nation especially as Geelong was also developing a relationship with the country. The students became involved with the small village of Viqueque in 2003 assisting the locals to develop and maintain practical skills, language (English) and computer management. The neighborhood house was refurbished and with new knowledge and encouragement some members of the town have emerged as leaders. These people have maintained continuity in project development and planning thus preventing haphazard and unsatisfactory efforts in improving their lives.
James has been involved since he was in year 9 and last year he and his Year 12 classmates raised funds to assist the people to build and maintain a water retrieval system. This year the project is to raise funds to renovate the Kindergarten building and to provide supplies. He spoke about the difference in the education program from Australia. The age levels of students vary in each class and one of the most difficult areas of learning involves learning Portuguese, English and the local language. James believes education is the key to further development and success. Numbers attending schools are increasing, as are the facilities and infrastructure.
After the presentation of a cheque for $672.00 we were informed our donation would help provide security of the room where 30 computers donated by Christian College were kept.
A reminder to members about he the 'Walk across the UK' Phil Edwards and a mate are undertaking to raise money to assist soldiers who are currently suffering the effects of military service.
