Guest Speaker: Kathy Bond. "Rural Aid for Refugees."
Kathy Bond
In 2002 Kathy attended a Peace Rally in Geelong, as the war in Iran was looming. She learned about detention centres and internment of Asylum seekers. She befriended 2 Afghan men and through them became involved with their experiences. The men eventually gained their freedom and have settled in Geelong with their families.
Kathy has become very involved in advocacy and assisting with help for refugees and asylum seekers through her work at the 'Welcome Place' in Geelong. At present there are up to 400 mostly young men from Iran, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Pakistan in Geelong and now that Protection Visas are available again she hopes their futures will be more hopeful.
Kathy recounted some examples of the horrific circumstances that many of these people endue to escape even more horrific circumstances in their home countries.
The 'Welcome Place' in Geelong is a 'drop in' place where people can feel safe, enjoy company, play pool etc. and learn more about this country. Ongoing support is needed even for people who are able to stay in this country. Kathy has used her talents as an Artist to raise funds by staging four exhibitions. There is no doubt that Kathy supports these unfortunate people and no doubt she and the group she works with are improving the lives of the refugees and asylum seekers in our area.

Thank You,  AG

FIND NEW MEMBERS
The top two reasons people join Rotary are to meet new people and to get involved in their communities. Many of the non-Rotarians you know are looking for the same things. Invite them to help with a service project, attend a networking night, or participate in a club gathering so they can see for themselves how Rotary connects leaders to make positive change.
Consider these potential candidates for membership:
  • Friends and family members
  • Business and professional acquaintances
  • Younger community leaders who are already connected to Rotary through Rotaract, RYLA, peace fellowships, Youth Exchange, and other programs
