Ned competed in the World under 20 Championships held in Poland in the discipline of Hammer Throwing. Ned told the assembled audience that the whole trip was a tremendous experience especially as he was able to renew friendships and through competing in Germany (where he won his competition) and in small town events where the facilities are extremely good he learned a lot about attitudes and dedication to sport. The qualifying round for the main competition was cut throat, there were 26 in his section but he made the finals and came 7th out of the final 12. Ned threw his personal best distance of 73 meters. A Hungarian produced the winning throw of 80 meters.
Ned has competed through the school system at State and National levels winning many competitions. He has found that amateur sport and competing requires love of the sport and dedication as training can be time and financially costly. At present he trains 6 days per week and travels several days to Frankston to train with his coach. He also runs and works in the gym. He also follows a high protein low carbohydrate diet.
Ned realises that to achieve his aim of becoming World Champion will be a long road as opportunities to compete in Australia are limited especially when compared with those in Europe, and facilities in Ocean Grove are not sophisticated.
Ned urging on the throw! |
He is currently in Year 12 at the Bellarine Secondary College and is co-captain of the school. He hopes to study Psychology or perhaps follow his Father into the Police Force.
Ned's father also enjoyed the trip finding the facilities very good, the food interesting and the language challenging.
They are both very grateful for the assistance and support given to Ned as it has enabled him to achieve most of his goals so far. If enthusiasm and dedication to his chosen sport is continued it is entirely probable that he will achieve his aims. We wish him well.
Thank You, AG
