Geoff Chandler, Tony Haines and Judy Greer visited Ocean Grove Primary to check on progress of students doing the Rotary Junior Citizenship Awards that is progressing well. The program has been running at Ocean Grove Primary for 18 years. DG. Steven Lamont will visit the Club on the 18th October. This will be partners' night and Hat Night for Mental Health. The hat categories will be – Fun Hat; Designer Hat; Theme Hat (mental health) and Bloke's Hat. A committee has been formed to organise a photographic exhibition on Queen's Birthday weekend. If anyone else is interested, please let Judy Greer know.
Newsletter: as Ann and Alison are both away on the 20th September, Coral Barker has kindly been offered to take notes that night and pass them on to Vic Harnath.
Youth: Geoff Chandler reported that he had visited a young family in Barwon Heads who had offered to host an exchange student. We have put them on notice, if a future need arises. It is felt hosting by families with young children can work well.
Social: John Calnin advised that the car rally on Sunday 18th September, starts at 10.30 and finishes at the Rotunda for lunch. He assured that it was all on bitumen roads. The course has been organised by Rod Birrell. He still needs a few more entries to make the lunch quota. Cost is $20 head and no limit on number of people in each car. The variety concert will be held on 4th October.
Fundraising: Peter Cullen thanked all gate volunteers. The GFL took in $30,000 in gate receipts last Saturday for the Grand Final. John Paton gave advance notice that the next Ride the Bellarine event will be held on Sunday, 9th April 2017.
Market: Coral Barker reported that they already had 30 entries for the first outdoor market in October. She handed market organisation back to Graeme Chamberlain.
Footy Tipping: Alex McGee reported that his computer was out of action at the moment, but that Rod Greer claimed to be the winner this week.
The Meeting: Ran as a social/fellowship event with no guest speaker. However, Alex McGee told the story of his experiences trying to cross into the USSR in 1979 in a van while on extended long service leave after he and Ann had worked 25 years for the Victorian Education Department. He was carrying suspicious material in the form of three prayer cards from St. Peter's in Rome. They were subjected to delays, interviews, questioning about their status and a complete vehicle inspection for six hours before finally being allowed to proceed. It appeared they were under suspicion because Americans had been coming in similar vans with bibles hidden in the chassis to be distributed to promote Christianity in Russia.
Graeme Chamberlain then told two unrepeatable but very good jokes.
