She found the Japanese very welcoming and this with hard work helped her to greatly improve her Japanese. Initially Sydney found the members of her host Rotary Club were formal but all had great fun.
Travel to school was long and involved and the school day was seven hours of fairly intensive work. The Japanese students and Sydney worked very hard as teachers and family had high expectations of them. Sydney's load was eased as many of her classmates could speak English.
The food was very different. Servings were small and initially she found the predominance of fish and rice difficult.
The Karaoke and vending machines were 'cool'!
This trip has given Sydney a wonderful opportunity to become a 'whole' person and to gain much more confidence. She believes it has also made her think about her future more deeply. Sydney is finding it difficult to settle into the school routine but this will be overcome as she believes she is more decisive and will knuckle down. Her Rotary Club hosts in Japan were very Kind and they have kept in touch.
The exchange appears to have been most successful for Sydney as she has developed great confidence and poise and will become a fine ambassador for the Rotary Exchange Students Program.
Thank you,
AG.
